Rik Mayall Dead at 56

Who remember him starring in this ad from when it was on? (21 years ago!)
Awesome game too.

Still can't make my mind up about his stuff - for every Young Ones or Black Adder there was a Bottom or a Filthy Rich and Catflap that was just embarrassing and pathetic.

I think we're all in agreement that 56 is WAY too young though...

Different strokes I guess. For me, Bottom was the highlight of both his & Edmondson's career.

It was silly slapstick, but there was also something very dark about it. Something about the Richie & Eddie characters was a little too close to the mark, the miserable drab existence they lived through was something people really dealt with, except they made it funny.

I never saw Rik Mayall in many things. Just The Young Ones and Drop Dead Fred. But his performances in both made him one of my favorite comedians.

In my opinion, he made The Young Ones what it was. He played one of the most hilarious characters in sitcom history. Sure, he was somebody you never wanted to know in real life, but his voice and mannerisms, his utter disdain for Neil, the constant bickering with Vyv and his pathetic attempts to connect with Mike were the highlights of every episode for me.

He will be sorely missed. :(

Ade Edmondson must be devastated. He couldn't have known when he passed on Bottom S4, he was actually passing on ever working with his best friend again.

While he had a long and varied carrier, it's his role as Rest Home Ricky in Shock Treatment that made me a fan. RIP, Ricky!

I absolutely love, love, love Bottom and The New Statesman. I'm saddened by his passing...

I went to one of his (post Young Ones) live shows back in the 80s. Absolute genius. He had the entire theater in stitches all the way through.

First wanker to post "Who?" gets a cricket bat to the fucking testicles.

In honour of Rik.

I only know him from The Young Ones, it's weird looking back to think that aired on MTV. Definitely too young...

Terrible news. I asked some of the yoof at work and yes, they need a cricket bat to the testicles.

It took a few eps for the penny to drop for me of the Young Ones, but changed my life in ways undefineable. Like Filthy Rich & Catflap, not sure about Bottom, and New Statesman wasn't on at a regular time near me.

His drama acting is underrated. If yo haven';t seen it, check out his ep of Dr Bell & Mr Doyle (AKA Murder Rooms), he is really quite surprising in that. And also last year's Jonathon Creek.

He's my age. Definitely too young. But then... he was a Young One. Bastard.

Was just about to mention Murder Rooms... really good.. not quite straight acting, more restrained Tom Baker and very effective in that style.

I forgot that he played in Drop Dead Fred. Saw that movie years ago and it was pretty funny. RIP Rik, you'll be missed :(.
