Rifftrax does "To Serve All My Days"

Rat Boy

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Check it out here. Apparently it's for the original version, not the newer '69 version and trust me you have to make sure you have the same version of the media that they're joking about. In spite of the controversy over the last trax, I laughed hysterically while listening to it.

Selling products related to fan productions like that is not cool. It's going to endanger the fans' ability to make home-made productions and release them publicly, and is dangerously irresponsible.

Rifftrax needs to think about how far they're willing to go as far as screwing over a fanbase to make an easy buck.

There's this:

Like all other RiffTrax, you are buying only the audio; the video must be downloaded separately!

To view the video and for more information about the project go to http://www.startreknewvoyages.com.

Unless I'm mistaken, the "Phase II" people and the RiffTrax people have been in touch with one another and worked the above out as a solution to the rights problem.

It is not going to endanger anyone or anything. The audio is being sold separately from the video (initially, this time), therefore it doesn't step on any legalities in terms of fan productions. It is no different than them doing audio tracks for STV, STVI, or STGen.

Also, RiffTrax is a business. New Voyages is not. Businesses strive to make money off the products they make. If you think, ethically, that riffing on fan productions is wrong, then that is a different story. If you don't like it, then don't buy it. If RiffTrax finds that doing riffs on fan productions wasn't as worthwhile as they thought (ie. very few buyers), then they will stop.

I was initially rather concerned by the whole thing, but the PII people have looked into it and--with some work--they've come to an agreement that should protect the fan productions. Now it's just there as good advertising. :)
