Was so bummed to read this news, he was such a nice man. My friend Ally and I met him at a convention in 2017 and he seemed so happy to be there meeting his fans. He assumed that Ally & I were a couple (we were not) and started telling us about his lovely wife and giving us "tips" he had picked up over the years on keeping your significant other happy. He was so enthusiastic about it that Ally & I looked at each other and decided not to correct him and just go with it and take the relationship advice, lol.

    RIP Richard

Definitely an underrated character actor. May he journey well.

For Admiral Paris... am glad they didn't name him "John Paris" as an in-joke/easter egg/whatever.

Sad news. He was also on seaQuest DSV as Admiral Noyce. I never had a chance to meet him. Rest in peace Mr. Herd.

I heard him speak at Shore Leave a while back, where he commented on some of the challenges for older actors -- FWIW, he said science fiction was actually one of the better genres for employing older performers. He was friendly and entertaining. I have an autographed picture of him, paired for display with my picture of Robbie McNeill, his TV son.

I liked what he brought to Admiral Paris, the quality of being formidable but with an underlying warmth.

Now he's among the real stars. Shine brightly, Mr. Herd.

RIP. Mr. Herd. You'll be missed.

I think I'll have to watch some of his Voyager eps and haul out the "Captain Galaxy" episode of Quantum Leap later.

I rather liked him as Admiral Noyce on Seaquest. RIP
