Ricardo Montalban dies

RIP, Mr. Montalban. You will be missed. :(

The only other celebrities I felt this bad about when they died are Robert Stack and Tony Randall. No matter what he was in, Montalban was easily one of the most enjoyable performers to watch. Fantasy Island, Star Trek, Naked Gun, etc.

Geezz louise. :(:(:( Another great one gone. This is getting depressing. Since last year we have lost a couple of dozen great performers. RIP Ricardo.:(

:(
Heard this on the radio. Perturbed that the report mentioned Fantasy Island, but absolutely no mention of his part in Trek or as Khan. Not even the Associated Press story mentions Trek or Khan, which I believe has to be among the top things he was widely and popularly known for.

Just a shame to see his tremendous place in Trekdom being ignored.
Actually, you must have gotten an early version because a later AP obituary does refer to his appearance in Khan. Another wire service also mentioned his appearance in the Trek episode Space Seed in 1967.

Ah, shit. He seemed like a good guy.

On the bright side, I just read that his pecs are expected to survive on their own for at least a year.

Joe, sad

Roarke, on "Fantasy Island," is easily the part that Montalban is most widely known and remembered for. That's just the power of a hit TV show - it probably was one of his least interesting roles.

Here's what Pauline Kael had to say about Montalban in TWOK:

Montalban is unquestionably a star in The Wrath of Khan (and his grand manner seems to send a little electric charge through Shatner). As a graying superman who, when foiled, cries out to Kirk, "From Hell's heart I stab at thee!," Montalban may be the most romantic smoothie of all sci-fi villains....And that great chest of Montalban's is reassuring—he looks like an Inca priest—and he's still champing at the bit, eager to act: he plays his villainy to the hilt, smiling grimly as he does the dirty....You know how you always want to laugh at the flourishes that punctuate the end of a flamenco dance and the dancers don't let you? Montalban does. His bravado is grandly comic....This man, who believes that his search for vengeance is like Ahab's, makes poor pompous Kirk even more self-conscious. Kirk is Khan's white whale, and he knows he can't live up to it—he's not worthy of Khan's wrath.

Requiescat in pace Ricardo Montalban , I hope you and Patrick can swap stories in the hereafter.

Another piece of my childhood is gone..

Wrath of Khan was one of the first Science Fiction movies that I saw when he came here, his performance along with the Ceti eels were some of the most memorable scenes my childhood.

My favorite movie of all time...so many great quotes...and all delivered so brilliantly. I love the one "He tasks..." just the way he said it when Kirk asks about the Botany Bay. And then.."revenge is a dish best served cold..." wow.
:(

Neither Patrick McGoohan nor Ricardo Montalban ever turned in a bad performance that I saw.

They will be missed terribly.
