Rewatching Voyager

Lifesigns

This is a very nice and enjoyable episode. We get more development for the Doctor and the idea that he can add to his programming, but this episode was more than that. It was a love story done in a very unique and very lovely way, and it gave much needed backstory to one of Voyager's most interesting races, the Vidiians. I love Dinara Pel as a character, because in this episode she became a very complex character even to the point where you can understand her reasoning for not wanting to go back to the way things were with her disfigured body. When she spends two weeks enjoying life again without worrying if she is going to die, it makes that final scene between her and the Doctor all the more poignant. This is one of Season 2's more understated episodes and one of it's best.

Investigations

Well, it's been a long road, getting from there to here... Wait, wrong series. ;)

This episode marked the end of the Michael Jonas/Tom Paris arc. In the last several episodes, we've seen Paris being a malcontent, shoving Chakotay, being late for shifts, and being a royal pain in the ass. In that time we've also seen Jonas sending messages to the Kazon Nistrim, but they were only small subtle scenes that all came to a conclusion in this episode.

I said before I love the Kazon/Seska arc, but I have to say I'm a little disappointed in how this arc ended. When Jonas was sending messages to the Kazon, he did so subtly. Here, when he's cornered, it's so completely obvious he doesn't know how to play spy. He almost turned into a nervous wreck, kind of like a cornered animal or something. Maybe it's just me loving the idea of story arcs coming to a resolution (Something Babylon 5 did so well, probably better than any of series I've seen) but this episode should have been a two parter. Maybe instead of killing Jonas, he's in the Brig and we get some aftermath with him, and Paris's reactions to Chakotay.

Speaking of Chakotay, man the writers seemed to screw him over this season. I mean how much abuse can he take. He get's betrayed by both Seska and Tuvok, he gets betrayed and violated by Seska again, and now Janeway and Tuvok used him as bait ti get Paris off the ship to find out who the mole is. Maybe he really was first officer in name only. One would think after so much betrayal, he might actually make Tuvok's mutiny holo-program a reality. If I was in his position, I don't know if I would have been that easy going.

Now that the Jonas arc is finally over, next up is double the Janeway, even though I already know Tatiana Maslany plays a better double than Kate Mulgrew. ;)

Oh, i really liked the Jonas-arc. Finally there was a story told, which was not pressed by the reset-button and next episode nobody do remember or mention anything anymore. Ok, you could do it better, have to confess this. But nevertheless was this kind of story-arc a reason I liked this season.
Unfortunately in later seasons like 6 or 7 there was nothing compared to this, this was sad.

At least they gave him something to do in Season 2.

Very well put. Add to it the fact that we get to see the character once more, which is pretty rare on Voyager, and it makes this one an excellent episode. Does anyone know what that music is that's played in the last scene?

Who is the individual you mentioned in your last sentence?
It's a long time since I watched VOY for the first time in my life and I only have very vague memories of the first watching. However, I have the impression - let me emphasize: an impression only, not fact - that when I was watching these episodes for the first time, I had my doubts that Tom really was the bad guy he was supposed to make us believe. From the very first moment on I was suspicious that all was not as it seemed.
Did anyone have similar experience?

So tomalak301, on to my second favourite episode in the entire franchise: DEADLOCK. I finished making wallpapers for that episode last week and I'm proud to share the first one here on this thread (as well as on my wallpaper thread) tomorrow for the first time. Good night (it's nearly 10.00 pm in this part of the world) and see you all here tomorrow!

One of the very rare episodes where the Doctor takes center stage, which I appreciated. Regrettably, the rest of the time, he irritated me, certainly because he had become too omnipresent afterward (and often acted on the verge of the reasonable without being worried).

Maybe I'm wrong but it seems that Tuvok used this small guile to take his revenge on Chakotay (who took easily the armchair of 1st officer which had to return to him quite logically ; who have stolen Janeway's affection/trust*, at least, it is what he had to think) even if he will never admit it to himself or to others.
And I completely agree when you said that Chakotay is1st officer in name. it is quite clear that Tuvok, her dear old and loyal friend, was always the one who she trusted most. I mean that everyone knew that they had to pass by Tuvok, to convince Janeway in some cases, at the point where even Chakotay, once, had to ask Tuvok to support him in his decision to help a reclusive Janeway, when the Voyager was stuck in the Void, whatever the means used. Plus, even if he is cold and distant, he remains very respected senior officer with the crew. And as I have already said, he is of a total loyalty* (sometimes even blinding) towards her. The only times when he has desobeyed her orders and deeply hurt/disappointed her, it was to protect her.

Here, it was a question of safety because there was a spy on board and quite naturally, Janeway rested on her chief officer of the security to make what was necessary to chase away him, even if that included to hold her 1st officer not informed and to play the hostility between Chakotay and Paris. It was maybe a little cruel but highly efficient - even if Neelix almost made the plan collapse - (and fun for those who are struggling with the character of Chakotay, like me, I admit!).

About Chakotay's romances, this guy doesn't really have a chance with the feminine gente, in spite of a pleasant physical appearance for some people. I mean that, when he didn't get used and/or dumped, he was remotely kept because of Starfleet rules... And the only solution which stays in him at the end, was to accept the advances of an ex--Borg, who has a sexy body but the emotional state of a 10-year-old child!

Yep, humiliation seems to go with this character! :guffaw:

Season 2, with all the abuse he did take, might have been his finest hour. That's a little sad.

Chaktay was on top in the episode "Scorpion", where he had issues with Janeway about the general direction. It is not who is right or wrong, Chakotay was never again so good like there. In Scorpion he played very well and his character developed.
But later on there was not development anymore.
Of course he got 7/9, but to be honest this was not real. It was wrong. The doctor belonged to 7/9, not Chakotay.
The only woman on Chakotays side should be Janeway, but the authors ruined it....

Deadlock

This really is a great episode getting into Janeways mind. It's fun in the action thriller kind of way with the two ships and crews but I watched this episode now and it's really a character study into Janeway the captain and what she would do in a win/lose situation. Having the Vidiians there was an added bonus because it was either destroy the ship because the Vidiians were boarding or destroy it because of all the structural damage is sustained. That scene with Mulgrew doubled was really well done for the time this episode was filmed. Great episode overall.

One of the books, Echoes, picks up on this episode. It's one of the better ones in the numbered series.

Innocence

This one could have been so much more than it was. I enjoy the concept of reverse aging (Hello Benjamin Button) but we don't find out about it until the end of the episode. To get to that point, we had to go through tedium, and an alien race that seemed really unreasonable, especially when Janeway was trying to be nice and respectful towards their culture. Every time Janeway offered to help the alien leader (And I forgot her name), she shot Janeway down. Now there was stuff I did like, such as Tuvok having to be a parent and the kids acting like kids. I also really liked the ending but I wish that ending was spread out over the course of the entire episode. Because it wasn't, this wasn't one of my favorites of the season so far.

The Thaw

There's always a mixed reaction when it comes to this episode, but I love it. It has that certain Masks Quality that I really like in Trek, those wacky insane stories that grab your attention even though they might be a little on the dumb side. In this one, I love how they dealt with Fear and McKean's performance as the Clown is always a treat to watch. Also, that final scene where Janeway tricks fear is one of the most badass Janeway moments in the series. Her "I know" really is terrifying, and then the fade to black to end the episode. Great stuff.
