Rewatching TNG

Captain Kathryn

Commodore
Commodore
I just finished the last episode of DS9 today (I watched the whole series for the first time recently and it ended today) and am moving on to re-watching TNG. I watched most of it when I was younger, but that was a looooong time ago before I was even really into Trek. I am a huge fan of VOY and DS9, so I hope TNG will be just as wonderful. The final season of DS9 was really amazing and has left me extremely happy that the show was so incredible, but also sad that my first watch is over. I wish there was more for me to watch... but alas, it is over. :weep::weep:

Anywho, I finished VOY in 2 months, then DS9 in 2 months...so I am expecting to finish TNG in roughly the same amount of time.

I just finished the first episode "Encounter at Farpoint"...and I completely forgot how Deanna Troi looked at that time!!!! Her gigantic 80's-ish hair!

I think she was much more attractive when she guest starred on Voyager as an older, more mature woman. Also her English accent was much thicker and more genuine on VOY and in the movie Nemesis than it was in the beginning of TNG. It seems as though, on TNG, she was stifling her real accent or something. At least in the first episode anyway.

Is it just me or do others agree that her later-self is much more attractive? Not that it matters to the story or me rewatching...just an observation and wondering what other people think?

Early TNG:

Later Troi:

Deanna looked a lot better when she was allowed to look and speak naturally, and they stopped trying to exoticize her.

Yeah... agreed.

I got so used to her "later self" from watching VOY and Nemesis...and because it had been SO long since I watched TNG. It's just...the first episode started and I was like.... WTF I forgot she ever looked this way.

Ahhhhhhh.... whyyyy....she looked way better naturally!

I've seen people get argumentative about the "Janeway Bun" and I always thought "who cares?" but this "early Troi" hair actually made me post about hair...which I've tried to avoid doing! Haha. Seriously though...what the hell?! Also she seemed a little bit oversexualized in the first episode too, although it wasn't too direct but enough to notice...she was the only girl not wearing pants from what I can see!

O'Brien looks exactly the same as he does on DS9. His early self and later self seem to be identical. And he retained his natural accent on both shows! Same goes for Worf.

Yes, but Worf got new hair :)

I just think the creators had some ideas about Deanna as a character and Betazoids as a species that didn't pan out they way they planned. Thankfully they ditched them.

At the start of TNG Troi was supposed to have a 'Betazoid accent' which was a fake accent made up for the show.

And her costumes were designed according to Gene Roddenberry's views on women.

Yeah I know she was supposed to be the "typical Betazoid woman" for that time and have a "Betazoid accent"...but it just seemed wrong.

Then suddenly later on she sounds uber-British.

Also I enjoy Worf's DS9 ponytail hair best! :D

I think Troi looks pretty in that first picture. (Is it from EaF or from AGT?) Anyway, having said that, I think her look did get better as time went by. I think she looked really lovely in the Voyager episode. I remember people at the time commenting that the best Troi ever looked was on Voyager!

I'm not a fan of either the earliest season 1 or the latest movie versions of her. imo, she never look as beautiful as she did circa season 4 or 5, when these were here standard looks

But this is about as beautiful as I think she ever was

There's a shot of Yar at the end with the skirt uniform.

And a shot of a man walking down the hall in the skirt uniform in the episode too; I believe when they are evacuating civilians in prep for saucer separation.

Yeah, Troi looked a lot better in uniform. Thank goodness for Jellico ordering her to put some clothes on. Still, her season 1 look was terrible... space cheerleader anyone? :p

Now that I have ENT complete (finished the series this morning), I am going back to TNG re-watch. Just finished "The Last Outpost" in Season 1, so I have a while to go. Will probably take a couple of months.

Just a thought---I am currently watching "Where No Man Has Gone Before" where they travel above warp 10, although against their will, it's somewhat similar to what Tom Paris does in VOY's "Threshold". However, no one on Enterprise turns into reptiles. Inconsistency! :D
