While little is known beyond the title, we now do know that Ryan, Graham, and Yaz will return. Chibnall doesn't know when the episode will air but it'll be some time between Christmas and New Year.

Showrunner Chris Chibnall said:

“We can’t leave the Doctor there! On that cliffhanger! Well, we did. But rest assured, the Doctor and her friends will be back for a one-off extended Special around Christmas and New Year. (I don’t know when they’re going to put it on yet, otherwise we’d tell you!). There will be Daleks. There will be exterminations. Thrills, laughter, tears. You know. The usual. See you at the end of the year.”

Damn. I actually was hoping we wouldn't be seeing her "fam" ever again. Or at the very least, for one holiday special. Is that too much to ask for?

Yeah, I was actually thinking the same thing. It feels like Amy and Rory all over again.
Yep! I mentioned this in the other thread, but I was ready for one of them for a selfless sacrifice. Instead they give to one of the guests that you have no investment in whatsoever. Its like, Chibnall thinks he's taking a shot at the title, but its a pulled punch. And we could at least do away with the fam for one episode, no? Surely some break time between this episode and season 13 would be a good space between appearences.

Guess he decided not to waste one/more/all of the Fam dying/quitting on an already overstuffed season finale.

The finale itself was overstuffed, only because half of it is wikipedia narration. The only ones who shone through were Whittaker and Jo Martin, too.

I really want her to be the Fourteenth Doctor, btw.

While Capaldi's specials were epilogues to the season's main storyline, Whitaker's are more like the final chapter of that season. I'd be shocked if at least 2/3 of the fam aren't gone following the special. Ryan's a mostly useless character. And Graham's character arc seems to be nearing completion.

Having just Yaz in the TARDIS would 1) allow for her to actually be given something to do more than just once a season and 2) still allow for continuity whenever Ruth, The Master or Jack return. Why write plot-halting exposition when everyone's already met?

I would support this, actually. This series proved beyond a doubt what OldWho's season 19 ALREADY had: More companion # great character interaction. Write Ryan and Yaz out of this season and NOTHING is lost. Graham, too.

Really, I want Yaz to stay, because Graham and Ryan at least had an arc in series 11. Ryan's ended with Resolution, and Graham's illness should probably resolve soon. But Yaz? Basically nothing.
