Revisiting Tom Baker...

So just like with Trek and TOS, I became a fan of Doctor Who and Tom Baker at a very very early age... Thanks to my father for both.

I hadn't watched classic Who for at least 12 or so years but yesterday I started watching again.

I love it. I was not disappointed.
Sure some things are dated, the style of filming and acting is different than today but still...

It is the Doctor and Tom Baker is just as good as I remembered. Funny, smart, silly ....

What say you ?

Tom's early stuff is often considered Doctor Who's golden age, with Phillip Hinchcliffe producing and Robert Holmes as script editor. However, once they left, things weren't quite the same although the later years managed a few classics (Mainly "City of Death").

For me, the "golden age" extends quite a bit beyond just Tom Baker, from Pertwee to Davison to be precise. They did a lot right with a very limited budget.

It should be no surprise to anyone that I'm a huge fan of Tom Baker. I either enjoy or love most of his stories with only a few serials that I didn't like (Revenge of the Cybermen, The Full Circle to name a couple). For me, I don't think I could say any particular time was the Golden Age because the tone and style of the show changed with each Doctor. My top three favorite Doctors are The Fourth, Second, and Seventh, which all cover very different styles and directions for the series.

I think it goes from 1963 to probably around the end of Talons of Weng-Chiang. That's not to say there aren't good or even brilliant stories between then and the end of the eighties, but personally I prefer the first half of the show's life.
