Revisiting 'Day of The Doctor"

Plus it probably had to be a familiar face that the Doctor hadn’t encountered yet, it’s no good the Moment picking Tegan or Ace or Jamie, and whilst the Doctor won’t remember the events that happened during Day of the Doctor until he gets to be 11, it does suggest that somewhere at the back on Nine’s mind Rose and Bad Wolf ring some bells, even if only subconsciously, whether you love or hate Rose (or sit somewhere in between) it’s hard to see her as anything other than AN Other companion, at the start at least. I think it fits in wonderfully with series 1 myself without taking anything away from it.

There are now only two other faces that would have truely fit the Moment other than Rose (aside from if the Moment just kept shifting faces to cycle through the Doctor's companions)...those two would be Susan, his granddaughter and the one he promised to return to and yet seemingly never has (at least via Cappaldi's talk with kids at the Dr. Who Experience.), and Clara, the companions that has literally saved him across all of time and space. Having two Clara's would have just confused the matter more than it already was, so Rose (the Bad Wolf) who was also across all time and space for a moment, fits best.

Actually, I put some thought into alternate choices for the Moment to mimic. I've assumed it was always going to be a modern day companion, making them someone the audience would recognize but the War Doctor wouldn't, plus I suspect Moffat would be attached to that "past? Or future? I get those confused" line. Presumably Rose was the original intent, since she is arguably the most popular modern companion and if they had gotten Eccleston we would of course had him and Billie Piper reunited.

Had Billie Piper been unavailable, I think the only other choices would have been Donna or Amy, as they seem the most popular after Rose. And if they went with Donna, they could tie it into the whole DoctorDonna thing.

I was thinking Donna as well as alternative possibility for the Moment.

Amy... That would have depended on whether or not Moffat knew at the time that he was going to use "Good night, raggedy man" in the next episode.

Rory would have been a really interesting choice. Completely unrealistic, but it would have been fascinating.

^^Well, yeah, Amy would have been a last choice, but I suspect they would have tried her before thinking of going to the classic companions.

I think Susan could have worked, in the same vein as the mysterious woman in 'The End of Time'; the older fans would have got it, while the younger fans would have needed only a quick explanation.

The Moment: "I chose this face and form especially for you. It's from your past..."

The Doctor: "Yes. My granddaughter. We parted ways a long time ago."

The Moment: "You left her on Earth... but she came home in the end."

That would have been a much more personal kick in the gut than, "How many children are there on Gallifrey right now?"

The younger viewer at home: "Oh, she's someone from the old days? Cool! It's the 50th anniversary, after all."

Done. You've got an original cast member returning for the big event, and the young set have Tennant returning to keep them happy. Sorted.

Honestly, I'd have chosen Ian. He's the most formative of the companions that he's ever had - at least, until Rose.
