Revisiting Babylon 5...

Of course not, nothing is. The point is you can question his methods all you like but you can't question his motivation. What it really comes down to is that he chose to act and the "alien armada" wasn't even his idea and didn't enter the war until after he was captured.

I can't, having all the information I have. But if I had been in Earthforce or Earthgov, I could have. I could have even known Sheridan well and STILL question whether that was the right way to do things, as some did.

There was room TO question.

When I clicked on that link I got an alert of a trojan from my virus software. Can you quote?

Jan
Here is the quote.
Jarvis said:
Over my years as a critic, one lesson I learned is that sci-fi fans are, uh, sensitive. I've never been forgiven for giving Babylon 5 a bad review. I got zapped every time I was unPC (or is that unSci?) enough to say Trekkie instead of Trekker. And I hurt a Star Wars fan who wants to explain that I was mean to make fun of geeky people who give up homes, civilization, and showers to spend weeks living on line to see a movie. Lighten up, guys, it's not the end of the universe.

He's totally right, in any case. Some people need to get lives.
Maybe. On the other hand, you could replace much of that quote with some sports teams and their fans and be every bit as accurate. Nobody seems to think that they're weird or nuts when they paint themselves their team colors and have parties in blinding snowstorms while waiting for the Big Game to start.

And I'd be willing to wager that there are at least a few more sci fi geeks who went on to turn their hobby into a living than those sports fans did. In other words, they got a life.

^Oh, I've been using that as an argument for decades. Ever been made fun of for having a Star Trek bumper sticker by a guy wearing a sports team jersey and cap, with said team's stickers all over his car?

In the Babylon 5 case, all he's responding to (according to his link) is someone who said they were glad Jarvis was wrong about Babylon 5 not making it to series.

Just finished Season 5. The final episode "Sleeping In Light" does come across as perhaps a bit too downbeat with too little positive in light of some new beginnings. Mind you we know "Sleeping In Light" was shot at the end of Season 4 when no one knew whether there would actually be a fifth season.

That shot of the B5 station being destroyed is rather sad and I felt moved, similar to how I felt when I watched the Enterprise destroyed in STFS.

Overall in reflection this is a great series with highs and lows. And it really evokes the feel of SF literature in so many ways. In some respects B5 didn't get much notice or recognition when it was in production, but I suspect/hope that that will change with time and more people see it on DVD.

For me it's the best SF series since the original Star Trek. In many ways I think it is more the spiritual successor to TOS than any of the actual spinoffs.

For me, that scene was accompanied by the best piece of music ever written for B5. yes, it was used one episode before, but that was ruined by Sheridan talking through it. Besides, it was more appropriate for the finale.

And if you want downbeat, I'd suggest Ron Moore's Battlestar Galactica. THAT was downbeat. B5 at least knew when to be serious, and when to have fun.
