Revisiting an old friend

Amazon had a sale.
I had spare cash.
I had spare time.

So, having been a long-time Trek fan, I faithfully bought all of TNG and DS9 on DVD from Best Buy when they first came out, because I wanted those bonus discs you could only get at Best Buy. After YEARS of setting VCRs to record and dubbing VHS tapes to remove commercials, I finally threw it all away in exchange for some nice, neat boxes containing simple discs - no commercials, no dubbing, just viewing pleasure!

But I didn't buy Voyager. Part of me told myself I was bitter over how the show had gone downhill as it progressed. But the reality was I didn't love the show enough to spend the amount of money on it that I had spent on TNG & DS9.

So I waited. And waited. And finally, years later, the prices FINALLY came down, and I had money again. I had always wanted to purchase the Voyager DVDs, and now I had the means & opportunity.

And so, I've been on a marathon of sorts. And I'm finding that so far, I really like Voyager. When it was first airing, I only caught it sporadically and never really got hooked. It was in the third season or so that I started watching faithfully, and while I loved the characters, I was always frustrated by the stories.

But in the first seasons, it really does seem like the writers tried hard to make the show faithful to its premise. Maybe it's easier to see watching the show in batches of 3 or 4 episodes at a time, but being halfway through the second season now, I'm surprised & pleased that so much focus was placed on the search for resources and the difficulties of being away from home.

I've often read that the crew too quickly melded into a Starfleet philosophy, and while I agree to a certain extent, the division in the crew was NOT as immediately abandoned as my old impressions remembered. Yes, they were too heavy-handed with the Holy Prime Directive (I just finished watching "Alliances" and yuck), but there are more Maquis influences evident in each episode than I had remembered.

There are still elements that annoy me, such as Neelix's jealousy. I was VERY glad to see that somewhat resolved in "Parturition." And the fact that the ship is still in Kazon space bothers me as well - how much territory do these thugs control, anyway? But on the whole, I'm finding this journey through the series to be highly enjoyable, especially having not seen these episodes in order or even at all for years. So far it's quite a fun ride, and I'm eager to get back to my DVDs to see/remember what happens next. :techman:

So, have YOUR impressions of Voyager's quality changed with the passing of time?

I've pretty much been a fan all along. However, I've yet to bring myself to watch the second half of Season 7 since it aired even though I've owned the dvds for years. I've made a few attempts but just couldn't do it.

Well, I have to confess. I sat down today and tried to watch "Threshold." I just couldn't do it. I got about halfway I think, and the ridiculousness just overwhelmed me. Is there any movement to purge this drivel from the canon? Sign me up! Blech!

The more I watch the show now, the more I appreciate it. It certainly had more of the spirit of TOS then ENT, which was supposed to be channeling all things TOS.

The Mrs. and I have been on a year long odessy of watching the entire series on DVD. Like a lot of modern women, she overcommits and lately hasn't had much time watching the series with me.

Personally, I've found the series much better than I remembered it. Yes, I still find the Kazon low-rent Klingons with amoeba brains and Seska still annoys the hell out of me. I cheered her death. Seasons four - first half of five spend way too much time on Seven and her background, saving the ship, etc., but she was supposed to be the ratings draw....

I do think the latter half of season seven falls right off the map in terms of quality with few exceptions ("Author, Author" and "Homestead"), but hey, most of TNG's seventh season was pretty forgettable except for AGT.

Still saving "Endgame" to watch with the wife when she has time. I remember it as pretty craptastic and look forward to seeing if I still feel the same way.

I am like kimc. I watched the series when it first aired until it ended in 2001. I couldn't wait til the DVDs came out because of the special features. I also waited and waited and then finally in 2005 I bought year six of Voyager. It was the only DVD set of the show that Hastings had at the time and it was only $50! So I bought it, brought it home and watched it, not knowing that there was an interview with Beltran in the features. I literally fell out of the bed when I was watching the interviews..I couldn't get over how good the menus looked and how clear the picture was on my TV screen! :D And having a flatscreen HD TV really helps the quality of the picture on TV as well as DVD. :D My viewing of Voyager has changed somewhat. I don't watch it on SpikeTV as much anymore as I used to. I usually don't get home now til around 3:30-4pm and it is most of the time already over when I get home. When it was on, I watched it religiously and was really upset when I learned that year seven was the final season of the show. I hated saying goodbye to it. I did get frustrated with some of the storylines at times, but I always loved the characters and could relate to a few of them. :D I relate most to the Doc. :) But I can understand not getting into it til the third season, but I feel a true Voy fan would have watched it since the beginning. :)

When Voyager first starting airing I was 12 years old and I was a total die-hard TNG fan. I was convinced that NOTHING could ever be as good as or better than TNG. I didn't watch even close to all the episodes of Voyager's 7 seasons but recently I started watching them all over again and I was surprised to realize that I like Voyager than any other Trek series. I love the characters and I feel a strange connection with all of them. I particularly love Janeway, Torres, and Paris.

While I dislike some of the continuity of the series I am overall pretty happy with most of the episodes and stories.

So, I call myself a re-born again Trekkie!

It does sneak up on you, doesn't it? ;)

Oh totally! I'm in love with Voyager...I can't get enough! I'm going to ask my boyfriend for the Voyager 7 seasons on DVD. I can already see myself spending countless hours re-watching all the episodes in childlike wonder:)

I was watching "Prophecy" yesterday on SPike TV with my b/f and he is not a Trek fan but I was just laughing and commenting, totally into it and he was so annoyed with me! He says that I am "easily entertained". But if he gave it a chance he'd like it ;)

As I suggested last week in another thread, I think Voyager is the 24c series that has aged the best.

It was the first of the series that I saw every episode first-run.

I was only 6 when TNG started and only starting to be a fan. (My mom and aunt took me to see TVH in theaters--which was my first Trek experience.) Our TV at the time only had rabbit ears and the channel that broadcasted it never came in well. It was season 4 before I started watching the show regularly.

DS9 was never consistantly aired the station that showed it, so I missed a lot of episodes.

But Voyager got its own network and always showed up at the same time so I got to see every one.

I liked it a lot then, but I'd say I'm more of a fan now. Though, admittedly, DS9 will always be #1 for me. :o

I think of "Threshold" as Voyager's "Plan 9 From Outer Space." It's enjoyable that way - especially when Tom's tongue falls off in sickbay.

I must admit this episode is a guilty pleasure for me mainly due to Tom Paris. :D

There was always something about Voyager that I enjoyed. I always liked the concept of one ship alone on the other side of the galaxy working to get home. I feel they did do a good job taking advantage of this, although they may have been able to do a little more.

I've watched the entire series a couple of times, each time, I still find things here and there that I have either missed or forgotten, so I would say that it gets better as it ages.

Farther west, the Worcester area. Almost the middle of the state. Feel free to contact me, if you like...*points to profile*

Right on, will do! :techman: Worcester, I've heard of it

I, too, bought seasons 1-7 thanks to the big Amazon sale last month. I'm now half-way through season 5.

When it was first on, I stopped cold at Threshold--my interest had been waning for awhile. But as I watch, I find that I must have seen a few as the years pased because I'll recognize an episode here and there--Extreme Risk, Thirty Days, and some others. I caught Endgame when it aired.

I couldn't agree more that it has aged much, much better than TNG. Seasons 1-3 are a lot better than I remembered, and I think that Janeway was at her peak. Also I loved Janeway/Torres scenes, Tuvok and anyone, and the Doctor and anyone. Janeway got a little rigid thereafter--and I think it comes from her fiance marrying someone else, though I don't think the writers necessarily intended that, that's just how I interpreted it.

Janeway wasn't quite as interesting in the later half of the series, but 7 of 9 was a hell of an addition--great character, great actress. I actually got the idea to buy the dvds from seeing 7 or 9 in the Fan Collective Series (Time Travel, Borg), and then netflixing and watching some great 7 eps as recommended by Jammer. I also love the Paris/Torres relationship.

I'm glad that I bought these dvds, I'm sure that I'll be watching them again as the years go by.

My collection is now done, I think--all the collectives, TOS 1-3, TNG 2-5, VOY 1-7, and ENT 1-4 (no DS9, no movies).

I think of "Threshold" as Voyager's "Plan 9 From Outer Space."
Same here. The episode is nowhere near as bad as it's usually made out to be, and if approached in the spirit of Plan 9 or TOS's "Spock's Brain" it's quite entertaining. :D

I enjoy Voyager as much now as I ever did. Yes, it has flaws and I've always been aware of them. Yes, it would have been great if the UPN execs had butted out and let everyone make the show they wanted to make. But it has (for me, anyway) the most interesting characters of any of the Trek series (Chuckles excepted) and it's not even close to being the travesty so many people claim it to be. I really need to make time to watch it again. :bolian:

I'd personally like to know why so many people say Voyager did not live up to its fullest potential. I want to know what they mean specifically. I, personally, would only change a few things on the series but I otherwise thought it was great.

What do people mean by that? How did it not live up to its fullest potential? I'm not saying I think they're wrong, I just want to hear some ideas as to how people think it could have been better.
