Return to Genesis

Would have better great to see the Sulu and Chekov team in ST6 as Captain and Exec alog with keeping Rand as Cumm officer.

Pretty good idea but Chekov was a first officer long before Sulu, so Chekov should have probably been the captain.

Do we know that for sure? There was a lengthy gap between TMP and TWOK where Sulu could have served as the XO on a starship or two. In fact, he could have been Decker's XO prior to Kirk assuming command.

The attraction between Saavik and Kirk was obvious in the theatrical release of TWOK, and in fact Bennett commented upon it in an interview shortly thereafter. I'd have liked to see that developed, but as presented in the "Return To Genesis" outline it's not even really a story beat - just an odd moment thrown in.

I just think it would have been a diversion, really. Saavik was what? 21, 22? In TWOK and Kirk's age was left open to interpretation but he was easily at least 50. Sure, age doesn't necessarily matter in relationships, but I cannot see someone like Kirk being attracted to members of his crew (or cadets).

I think the David and Saavik relationship could have been something to expand on. It would have created a bit more drama in TSFS had David and Saavik been a couple. It would make things complicated between them when David revealed the truth about the Genesis Project and of course, when Saavik has to have sex with Spock.

Well, it seemed to be just that in the outline - it's a moment that's just suddenly there, and then doesn't affect the story.

Nothing about it would have bothered me per se, because the attraction was effectively established in TWOK. That Kirk would find himself drawn to a much younger admirer was, in fact, right in line with everything else about his character's arc in that story: he's an unhappy middle-aged man in the throes of a life crisis. That everything about his behavior in the moments leading up to and during the beam-up from the Genesis cave is him showing off for Saavik is pretty plain. It's not only right there in the elevator scene, but woven throughout the movie in various ways.

Bennett's remark about Saavik's later interest in David Marcus was to the effect that she perceived him as a more available version of James Kirk.

Sure, the whole thing would have been a bit...disappointing in terms of Kirk's "hero space" if one's real wrapped up in that, but TWOK is as much about the cost of Kirk's human failings throughout his life as it is about any other thing. Finding an effective way to carry some of that into TSFS would have made the latter a less generic, predictable, juvenile and superficial movie.
