Return of the Fourth Installment

Anyone notice a trend lately? X-Men Origins: Wolverine was the fourth installment in the franchise. Terminator Salvation will be the fourth installment in the franchise. Both films are both prequels, in a way, and both are films trying to re-energize their respective franchises by continuing in a new direction.

Spider-Man 4 is on the way. So is another Pirates of the Caribbean. Is the fourth chapter now the cool thing? It used to be the harbinger of doom. Batman & Robin. Lethal Weapon 4. The Phantom Menace, however that might be stretching it a bit.

What other fourth installments of successful science-fiction and fantasy franchises can we look forward to? An Evil Dead 4? The long delayed Jurassic Park 4? Any others?

Shrek Goes Fourth is coming down the pipeline, if you want to consider that Fantasy, and technically, the first of the Hobbit films will also be a fourth/prequel of a series.

EDIT: Out of curiosity, I went to Wikipedia and they have a page on film tetralogies, most being cheap horror or animation franchise, and doesn't include upcoming projects: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_film_tetralogies. Worth noting for sci-fi/fantasy, however, is Indiana Jones as another recent example of a high-profile franchise getting a fourth instalment...

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

i'm glad we're moving beyond the idea that film series should be trilogies. if there's stories to tell (which there clearly are with super hero flicks) they should continue making them as long as they have good scripts, the cast and they keep making money.

Well Jurassic Park 4 is out, given their whole "Chricton dying is a sign" argument. Evil Dead 4 was confirmed as being in the works last year.

As long as the fourth films have a decent story then i have no problems with them. Its only when a story is clearly concluded in the first 3 films and then they tack on a fourth that problems arise- which is one reason to be grateful Back to the Future 4 never came about.

I don't think it's cool, just that Hollywood's still eager to make bucks & another sequel's a pretty sure thing, with audiences being more receptive to bad third installments and on.

Reminds me of 2007, when we were overrun with Part Threes. Bourne 3, Pirates of the Carribean 3, Shrek 3, Oceans 3, and a bunch of others.

Oh yeah, speaking of Bourne, even though it isn't sci-fi or fantasy, a fourth one is being prepared. Add that to the list.
