I'm a bit up and down with this episode.

I have a thing for the bottle episodes (in this case, any episode that is set on the ship and has no outside influences or scenes away from the ship). So this one qualifies as one of those that I should like but it ultimately isn't very good. The Beowulf stuff is uninteresting (Freya is mildly fun) and the story is mostly forgettable (energy beings or some such).

It's the doctors first real outing so good for his development and obviously it has to be holodeck heavy in nature but it's an episode that I generally fast forward through.

Not brilliant.

I must admit that I had some problems with this episode the first time I watched it. I found it rather silly.

But watching it a few times more have made me like it more and more. It's a good performance from The Doctor and some funny moments in it too. But not one of the best episodes of season 1

I'll give it 2 points out of 5

I liked this episode, probably because I was reading Beowulf at he time, and I gained some philosophical insights from it. But the first time I saw it I was pretty bored. Then I started thinking about how Beowulf's quest of purpose to beat the monster was a little like the Doctor on a journey to find his purpose in life.
So, I don't think it was the most exciting episode, but there are good things to be said about it.

Kim's brief appearance lacked something. I liked the doctor getting character growth, (before I knew he'd be an over used pain at times) Freya, and Janeway's hair. That's shallow and not saying much but it's not an interesting bottle show.

Very well directed, produced, acted. Nicely lit, nice costumes,& cinematography.

Does anyone tune into Star Trek to watch holodeck episodes? Are they just to give the writers & actors something else to do? I watch Trek to see sci-fi, not Sherlock Homes, Jane Austen, or Beowolf.

I don't. But I surmise it's to give us an inside look into a character in a personal or social setting. However, with hobbies so dull, so unreachable, I cringe at the wasted budget in say, the Lord Berdley one.

(bumping for relevance)
I just rewatched this, i hadn't seen it since I was a kid. An enjoyable filler episode (that's a step higher than "popcorn"). In this episode, we see the beginnings of growth in the Doctor's character development. Janeway also grows slightly. Everyone else is basically a talking head. A solid performance by Picardo, I can overlook the weak science and annoying technobabble; i rate this 4 out of 5.

A whole new quadrant to explore and the best they can do is give us a holographic episode 12 episodes in? And beowulf on top of it? Blech.

I viewed it as a vehicle to bring the Doctor into play, but the holographic story should have lasted 7/8 minutes max within a larger story. Not BE the story.

They could have done better; but if the budget called for a less expensive show, and they needed a Doctor story not set in sickbay, what else could you do?
