As the new year begins, a terrifying evil from across the centuries of Earth's history is stirring. As the Doctor, Ryan, Graham and Yaz return home, will they be able to overcome the threat to planet Earth?

It's a week later and the world didn't end because Doctor Who didn't air a special on Christmas Day. Less than 24 hours to go and it'll be a wonderful way to ring in the new year!

I think it was an alright episode, some nice ideas with the Dalek mutant. But some very cringe worthy moments concerning doorbells, and using eggs to discover what the mucus was.

Hm, so we never saw the silver Daleks used for filming (perhaps standing in to hide the jerry-rigged one in case they couldn't keep witnesses away.)
Not bad, though the Graham/Ryan/Ryan's Dad plot really felt like a completely separate episode from the Dalek-chasing plot. The domestic plot was OK when it was Graham and the dad, but, basically the two things just didnt gel together even though either storyline individually was decent. IOW Bradley Walsh is still stealing it.

I’m not really enjoying this series of Doctor Who and haven’t watched an episode of the latest series in a long time (I think I have watched 3 of this series before giving up), it’s really not for me at the moment. Is it worth checking out this special though? Has Doctor Who got it’s spark back? The Daleks are tempting me... or will watching it just reinforce my dislike for Doctor Who in its current form?

Can't help but wonder which private firm is going to get the government contract to set UNIT back up.

Was half expecting a Brexit gag there, but it got close enough.

Homebrew Dalek was cool. Had a similar image in my head for a fanfic where Davros ejected over Earth and had to build bodyguards from human tech whilst awaiting rescue.

Brexit killed UNIT!

Probably...

Ok, so that was interesting. I completely agree with @Lonemagpie the Dalek stuff was good, and the family stuff wasn't terrible, they just felt very badly mashed together. Every time the episode got up a head of steam it was derailed by shifting back to a talky bit which slowed the momentum, and there was a LOT of just standing or sitting around talking here. The guest cast were great, but yet again Chibnall fills the Tardis, and who loses out? Seriously why didn't Chibnall just have the Dalek hijack Yas? It would have least given her more to do?

Anyway, the Dalek was menacing, and we haven't seen one look so dangerous in quite a while. Nice that it was still a threat even just as a mutant on a human's back, that was really interesting. I liked the junkyard Dalek as well. The plot about stopping it signalling the fleet was a bit hackneyed but it was okay.

Ryan’s dad showing up was unexpected, and in another episode I’d have really enjoyed the conversations between him and Ryan and him and Graham (Walsh wins again) but here they just leeched any tension from the episode, and yet again the threat felt oddly lowkey. Felt like there was a lot of padding (though not enough padding to give Yaz a storyline).

Jodie was good. Loved the joke about rels, and I adored how blunt she was with Ryan’s dad

On the whole I enjoyed it, just felt badly paced and a bit padded, but maybe that’s the fault of the hour runtime. Should have been more of a manic race against time and less of a let’s stop for a cup of tea and a chat about Grace.

I really enjoyed this episode. There were a few corny moments, particularly the Monty Python-esque opening and some of the Gold-esque action music, but I liked seeing a smaller Dalek episode. It's far from the best Dalek story, but it's also far from the worst (the Manhattan two-parter will always hold that "honor").

I wasn't sure about including Ryan's dad in the story and his part initially felt isolated from the rest of the story, but I liked how his story was woven into the main story by the end, helping Aaron earn Ryan's (and Graham's) trust and admiration.

I liked the junkyard build of the Dalek, especially since it was a one-off appearance. It felt reminiscent to the battle Dalek in Remembrance of the Daleks, even if that one was white.

Even though it wasn't needed, I liked how the episode took the moment to explain why Kate and the rest of UNIT didn't get involved and I loved the Brexit gag. Still, I hope The Thirteenth Doctor gets the chance to meet up with Kate sooner than later.

I think this is the first time (at least on the show) a Dalek has been inside the TARDIS, with or without its casing.

I gave it an eight. It was an original use of the Dalek, operating without its casing. The Daleks work best in small numbers. The fewer the better,

This series is still missing a hook for me. It’s ok, but not hooked yet.

Pretty good episode, kinda what the show has been missing: a sense of urgency and adventure.

But I can't help being pulled out of the story every time someone doesn't recognise a Dalek. Seriously, they stole the whole planet and attacked the Earth just a few years ago... there shouldn't be anyone that doesn't know about them. Has their been an in-show reason why no one remembers this stuff happening, beyond Humans are Thick?

Yes, Moffatt had the time cracks erase all memory of them from Amy's era.
