Resistance is Futile! My Kids will be Assimilated!

As recently as a month ago, my 9-year-old son has told me "I hate Star Trek!" Of course, he really hadn't sat down and actually *watched* a full episode, so I didn't take that very seriously. He's been a huge Star Wars and Harry Potter fan though.

I think the commercials for the new movie have changed that.

He's actually shown interest in the episodes that are being shown on SciFi, asked me specifically about the Borg (they were in a book about robots he read), and tonight, I took this picture:

If you can't tell, that's him watching First Contact while reading over my copy of the 1701-D blueprints! I'm so proud! :D

Why are you posting half naked pictures of your son on some internet forum, isn't that a bit irresponsible?

He's got his pajama pants on. For some strange reason, he doesn't like to wear a shirt to bed.

(And thanks for screwing up my accomplishment. :p)

As a father of a 10 year old Star Wars fan whose been actively resisting Trek, I know how you feel. For my son, it's the Burger King toys and the movie previews that have been getting him interested. I told him he can't use my Star Trek glass (yes from Burger King) until he passes a Star Trek quiz. He's intrigued.
Yes, it is hard being a father!

I think you may have a little Trekker in the making. :D I can imagine that he finds the Borg intriguing. When I was about his age and saw "Q Who?" for the first time, I was absolutely bedazzled.

And what comes to the pic you posted - I see nothing wrong with it. The blueprint was the one that caught my eye, not your son. :)

I have trekkerized all my kids. My 12 year old (who has seen all of VOY and ENT, half of TOS and is now watching the second season of DS9) declared the new movie "the best movie he has ever seen" which was quite an accolade I thought.

However.. my proudest Trek parenting moment came a few weeks ago. My two year old was playing quietly with the tv in the background when an ad came on for the new film. She sat up, pointed, and said loudly "LOOK MOMMY, STAR TREK!"

I was so proud.

We have also played Star Trek charades in my house, where you have to imitate something from some Trek scene. I always remember my older daughter making the walking motions of Species 8479 climbing up the hull of Voyager and everyone yelling what it was because it was so recognizable even though we had no hints.

So, continue with your programming fellow Trek indoctrinators. Resistance is futile.

Either put some smilies on this or something, because you sound very silly with this. The fatc that you'd even look at it that way and then go to the trouble or writing it out is troubling to me.

Just leave it alone. Let's try to keep the thread on topic - thanks.

I have two students aged 8 and 11 that told me that if they were good, their mother would take them to see a movie...they said they wanted to see Star Trek.:techman:

My 12 year old son has been wanting to see it too. One of his favorite phrases lately is "It's excitin'!"

Jaespol, just how could somebody ID BJ's son from that photo? You can't even see his face - because it's bent over the blueprints. Jeez.

But back on topic, which is of course assimilation: B.J., what can I say but "Aw!" I am thrilled for you - and for all you Trek assimilators.

Cut out this kind of crap, Jaespol.

Its my opinion and I genuinely think its irresponsible to post pictures of minors on internet forums where anyone can see them
It's none of your business when a parents posts a harmless pic of their child in this forum. Further comments can be taken to PM.

My 2 and 3 year old girls will ask to see "Spock" by which they mean the animated Star Trek. The other day, the 3 year old was standing in front of the TV quoting along with Capt. Kirk, "space, the final frontier." That moment melted this daddy's heart!

I've shown them TMP and they fell asleep (adults do that too) but I think they're too young for most of the non-animated world of Star Trek right now.

It all has to do with exposure. In my high school there is more Star Wars fans than Star Trek fans. Though that might change soon. I think at some point in the '90s Star Trek was everywhere, and people just took it for granted and forgot about it. The franchise got a nap, and it has woke up with more energy than ever.

I think that the new film may change some perceptions, but I'd have to see the marketing data - specifically the demographic breakdowns for opening weekend.
