Resident Evil FILM Franchise

Well I just watched all three films after finding out that they are actually going through with the fourth film in the franchise, and I have to ask the question - do any Resident Evil fans actually like these films?

I mean, I was so bored during the first film, I went out and bought the Sims 3 (and I'm not that much of a fan of Sims, but good game). The ending was the only good point of the entire movie, and I only enjoyed it because it had a bit of a shock factor, and seeing Raccoon City in ruins was also fun.

But what is the point in all of them? They're not within the canon of Resident Evil (which I know, to have a film they can't really do it in the first place). But the Alice character is such a dry, boring character. "Oh look, let's take away the survival horror of Resident Evil and make it all about her". I know, I know, Resident Evil games are now about action than survival horror but that doesn't excuse Paul Anderson to make a shitty film.

From the first film I can only see very few references to the original game. The Spencer mansion which is seen for a whole 2 minutes, Umbrella and the T-Virus, who don't seem to be as bad as they were in the game franchise, the monsters (zombies and a licker), Raccoon City and the S.T.A.R.S emblem at the very end of the film.

All of this means fuck all in a film based on Resident Evil if there is no decent storyline behind it that actually has relevance to the games. I mean, for fuck sake, did anyone else get the feeling that the Red Queen and Umbrella were actually trying to stop a biohazard from happening in the first place because the protagonists of the film were going to smuggle the virus out in the first place? All of the Umbrella scientists were obviously infected with the T-Virus as soon as it escaped, so the computer doing what it needed to do by sealing it off completely so we wouldn't have a world overrun by bioweapons like in the next two films, and it is at fault... because? This is the basic story of the entire film. And then you get Alice, who I really don't think knows what is really going on, calling the computer a "homicidal bitch" constantly... THE COMPUTER WAS DOING YOU A FAVOUR. Jesus Christ.

Then I got to the second film. Now, I've watched all of these films before, the second and third even at the cinema, but never back to back, and I've never paid them enough attention to notice the really horrid dialogue all around the movies.

Anyway, so in the second film they decide to give the Resident Evil fans a "treat"... because we're all labrapoodles here aren't we. Anyway, they give us the Nemesis, which in its defence, is quite awesome (until the end of the film where they make him completely pussy out). We've also got Jill Valentine, who looks hot during the entire film, but again they completely fuck up a storyline that they could have actually used. If I were writing the film, I would have made hints that Jill was suspended because the S.T.A.R.S did actually go to the mansion after the events of the first film, and the game, on some level, did happen, instead of saying "her partner Leon S. Kennedy died"... thanks.

And of course, you've got the S.T.A.R.S team. The corner stone of the Resident Evil franchise. I spend a tiny portion of my life wanting to be in the S.T.A.R.S team. And what did they do... they made them a bunch of idiots that all got completely wiped out. Sure they "are the best" as the Umbrella woman states, but why exactly did they stop aiming for the head? Especially the sniper who is obviously based on Forest, who shoots 2 zombies in the head, and then decides to put 2 in the Nemesis' chest.

To sum it up, I didn't like the second one film at all. They overpowered Alice to the point that she was able to hand to hand combat with the Nemesis, not only that they made the Nem a sissy, protecting Alice because he remembered who he was, and then Alice dies, I thought it would be good then but no, they save her. Well done.

Good point of that movie, L.J. I love Mike Epps and most of his scenes made me laugh.

Then finally, the third installment... So they took out every mention of Jill because the woman who played her was busy with another film, they once again made Alice in to some super hero which was unneeded, and they brought in Claire Redfield, which once again, was un-needed. Not to mention the fact she was played by Ali Larter, who I think is one of the worst actors currently active.

Overall though, I didn't really see a storyline behind the third Resident Evil film, except for a desperate attempt to stay away from the Resident Evil games. It wasn't until the last 20 minutes that a proper storyline started to form, throwing us a "bone" by adding in a Tyrant and Albert Wesker... just for the sake of it. It wasn't until they were attacked and Carlos decided to kill himself (even though he was bit for a very long time before he got the anti-virus in the second film, but apparently he can't just go get it this time, even though they have plenty of stock). But until then I saw nothing of a storyline, just some people running around doing nothing, and Umbrella wanting to nab Alice again.

Also, once again Alice gets annoying, stupid lines like "I met your sister, she was a homicidal bitch". She forgot to mention "who we shut down and let all the zombies out that started this whole apocolypse in the first place".

So, now they're making a fourth film, and after my accidental rant, I want to know your thoughts on the film franchise, and also the game franchise for a comparison.

If they make a fourth film, I actually hope they include nothing from the Resident Evil games, because honestly, what's the point? Wesker as the head of Umbrella and nothing to do with S.T.A.R.S? Claire not even hinting she has a brother? S.T.A.R.S being a bunch of faries? Uggh, what next? Chris Redfield up beside Alice? Maybe even Leo... no wait, he's dead.

I can easily make the same point in a smaller way...

* 1st movie - ok movie with good action

* 2nd movie - funnier but thats not what RES is about despite good action the plot was substandard and Nemesis was ruined.

* 3rd movie - bag of shit though was nice to see Wesker but still shite.

I thought about Wesker, and there really was no need to put him in the film at all. He does nothing except bitch and moan. He's wearing the shades... but why? He was wearing them throughout the series because he was masking his red eyes after injecting himself with one of the viruses. Here he is head of Umbrella... how? lol.

^ He's head of Umbrella because he's systematically infected the rest of the Umbrella leadership with the T-Virus. It was mentioned in the novel (which was better than the film).

I like both, sorry to burst everyone's bubble. I call the games the Prime Timeline and the movies the Film Timeline.

The first two were at least serviceable, but extinction was Saturday Night SciFi (excuse me SyFy) bad.

I preferred the third one to the second, but then Milla and Ali Larter sharing the screen is :adore: for me.

Milla kicks ass as Alice. It would be nice if she had better scripts to work with, though.

I'm a huge fan of the games, and refuse to even acknowledge that the films exist. They just take a huge dump on the storyline of the games.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

With a story as entertaining as what was found in the RE games, there is no good excuse for the crap that we got.

Exactly. The RE writers understand horror, suspense, action, and narrative. Paul Anderson is just a slight step above Uwe Boll. But just slightly.

I liked all three, even the third although I definitely agree it was the weakest and I got it in part just to have the trilogy and because it's entertaining in that so-bad-it's-good way only they have better special effects than most of those types of movies do.

One of the problems with the film series though wasn't entirely Anderson's fault. When they were planning it he wanted to do a straight remake of the first game as the first film according to the BTS documentary on the first disc. Capcom/Sony both said absolutely not because they were worried that a remake of the game as a film would prevent sales of the game in the future because people would be too lazy to play it when they could just watch it thus hurting profits.

Be glad we didn't get what was originally originally planned though. The original plan was to hand the series over to George A Romero and the original script - please note I usually love Romero's zombie work - was horrid.

It has been suggested that the next film will not follow Alice to Japan though. Instead it will follow Claire to Alaska where they discover that Alaska is free of the T-Virus because it is infested with the Plagas.

^ Yeah I read about Romero's Resident Evil script... I didn't really like it. And also it's already been said that they won't do another Resident Evil film unless Milla signs on to play Alice, which of course is a mistake because they have a genuine excuse to make a half decent film now. Just reboot the whole franchise, Capcom are doing it with the games.

Also I heard about what Anderson wanted in the first place, and to be honest he's stupid to suggest it. No game developer in their right mind will make a film based completely off a game, although again Anderson had a perfectly good oppertunity to make a decent game WITHIN the 9-12 hours between the start of the infection, basically the events surrounding Resident Evil: Outbreak.

That's what I would write about, either the S.T.A.R.S Bravo Team's trip to the mansion, and perhaps following each member in to the mansion (leaving the events that 'Becca has until after the events of Resident Evil 0), and then showing their eventual deaths. Add in a few unknown characters (like Alice) who could eventually survive the initial outbreak, It's not exact canon, but it's near enough and already sounding better than the first film.

Or I would write a film that would take place during the events between Resident Evil 1 and Resident Evil 3 (which are sort-of seen in RE:Outbreak). You could easily make a good survivor/horror story there, I know they probably wanted to stay clear of Dawn of the Dead style films, but fuck it man, they're good films for a reason. But anyway, I would have love to have seen the events around the Raccoon City P.D and how the police attempted to stop the zombies. There would be lots of chance for scary, on-the-edge scenes, and a lot for character development.

Well, just took a gander at the Romero script and got about a paragraph in before it made me gag. I had to stop here

CHRIS walks into a characterless apartment. He quietly
sheds his clothes. Even in silhouette, we can see that his
body is in perfect shape, not pumped, but lean and tight.
Moving lithely, with the natural grace of a cat, he eases
himself into a bed where...

...a beautiful young girl, JILL VALENTINE, seems to be fast
asleep. As Chris nestles in beside her, we see that her
eyes, facing away, are open. Chris gently drapes an arm
around her and lets his body relax.

CHRIS
(A whisper) Glad you're still
here, lady

JILL
It's my apartment.

CHRIS
(Surprised) You're awake.

JILL
I've been awake. Since you left.

CHRIS
Sorry.

A pretty useless romance sub-plot if you ask me lol

I do agree with the rest of you that a movie that would compliment
the games would have been pretty cool as well. Something like a side story that didnt piss on the old story but at the same time brought in new stuff

Yeah exactly. I loved the Outbreak games, and I wouldn't mind seeing something based around that.

I think if they go ahead and do a Left 4 Dead film, it's going to basically be what I wanted the RE films to be like.

And also @ the storyline... jesus.

"Jill, here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you."

I'm going to break with the crowd a bit here, I didn't care too much for the second (need to rewatch it though for a second opinion) but I enjoyed the first and last film. They show the last one on cable a lot and it's nice in HD and I like the whole desert thing and even the crazy Alice stuff. I know it's not brilliant but they're decent timepassers.

Wesker was supposed to be the main enemy in the 4th one set in Toyko so they introduced him in the 3rd movie. However I don't know about those plans anymore.

Well Anderson has stated he is writing the fourth film now, and honestly, I don't want Wesker to be the villian in the next film. It's pointless to have him as the main villian without any backstory towards it. The whole point in Wesker in the games is that he betrayed the S.T.A.R.S team, killed the S.T.A.R.S Bravo team leader infront of Chris' eyes and the whole evolution of Weskers character, from when he betrayed S.T.A.R.S to the events of Resident Evil 5.

I just took a look at the WIKI page for Extinction and it links to an IGN interview with Anderson. He's writing (but not directing) and the film will take place in both Alaska and Tokyo. It will continue to follow both Alice and Claire and its similar to RE2 and darker (I'm hoping that means its closer to the game RE2 and not Apocalypse).

Well, that's what wikipedia says, and let's face it, it's not the most reliable source of information. What is being said now could very likely change before any release.

Again, I don't want to see Alice in the movies, I don't like Milla and never have (except for in Fifth Element where she can hardly speak any English, it was only after that film that I realised it wasn't far from the truth). And again, I hate Ali Larter. Two of the worst possible people to star in a film in my opinion.
