Ok, so I finally got round to playing this. I just finished Chapter 3-1, so that puts me almost halfway through the game. I have to say, while it's a pretty good game overall, and the story seems to be developing nicely, there are a few things that bug me about the gameplay. Well, one thing that bugs me, and one thing that downright pisses me off.
The thing that bugs me is the fact that you can't walk while aiming your weapon. That strikes me as a stupid move, and you can tell it was only done to artificially ramp up the tension during battles. Frankly, after playing the masterpiece that is Dead Space, it's just plain annoying.
Now for the thing that downright pisses me off; Sheva. She is fucking useless. When she's not running round stealing ammo, she's running in front of me and getting in my way, or she's getting herself stuck, or getting herself killed. She has no concept of avoiding enemies at all - wheras I'll run round one or two enemies to escape or create a bit of room to fight, she'll run directly at them, forcing me to have to go back and help her, or in worst case scenarios (such as when fighting the chainsaw wielding maniac), she'll just get carved up and that's Game Over.
I think the Co-Op angle is a great idea, but it shouldn't be to the detriment of the Single Player experience. I hate games that force you to have (i.e: look after, or protect) a partner, as the A.I on said partner is usually pathetic, and RE5 reinforces that.
Honestly, whilst I love playing games with friends - either in Co-Op, or competetively - sometimes I just want to sit down on my own, really get my head into a SP experience, and soak up the atmosphere. That goes doubly so when we're talking about Survival Horror games. This one has been tarnished by me being forced to work with shoddy A.I.
Sorry, Resident Evil, but Dead Space is still the king of current gen Survival Horror.
