Replicators just became boring after a while?

ReadyAndWilling

Fleet Captain
Anyone else thought the Replicators just became really dull after the first few appearances?

I dunno, it just became tiresome for me.

I never found the killer legos convincing. They were handled better in Atlantis, methinks.

I thought by Atlantis they were just useless and didn't fit the storyline.

When they were killer LEGOs they were fun, then they became human and were just so overused. They were completely pointless in the first SG1 DVD movie.

I didn't really mind the Replicators in Atlantis, but I really wish Weir had stuck around to help better explore them.

Yes, I agree. The Reps were the Borg, but with less personality.

The writers had much more interesting villains in, say, the Ri'tu. Or how about doing something with the hideously complicated and frakked up Taur'i-Tok'ra-Jaffa alliance?

Stargate has always been an immensely frustrating experience, watching the writers glom onto the most pedestrian elements (eg, the Ancients = stiff, boring actors in robes) while ignoring or underdeveloping the elements with great potential (eg, the Genii).

They served their purpose on SG-1, where they were completely defeated not once, but twice! But for some reason, the writers kept bringing them back in Atlantis instead of trying to give the series its own identity. Like the aformentioned Genii.

When they were the metallic spiders, they were good, nicely done with the fear factor too. Just a touch of Aliens in the 'take off and nuke the site from orbit' extreme reactions they created - made them appear genuinely threatening.
Over time though, as with all over-used threats, they became dull and repetitive. Particularly once they became 'human form', they were just plain ridiculous.

I particularly disliked the way Atlantis handled them - I really liked SG-1's simplistic backstory of them starting out simply as toys. Atlantis' attempts to make them more sinister got irritating.

The Replicators were cool on SG-1, even when they introduced the human models. I grew weary of them in Atlantis, though.

Something I've been wondering, is the reason the Replicators were brought into Atlantis as posing as the Ancients simply an excuse to re-use all the Ancient ship designs, costumes, props, and the like?

I'm not sure about the costumes, but the replicators were originally intended to be the primary villains of Atlantis. That's why they were introduced at the end of season 3 as being in a distant galaxy, back when they were first setting the groundwork for Atlantis, when they first started to think SG-1 was going to be canceled any year now.

I'm mainly wondering why they decided to have the Replicators posing as Ancients. Was it just a feeble attempt to seperate these Replicators from the SG-1 Replicators, or just an excuse to re-use all the Ancient costumes and ships? Because, I imagine those probably weren't cheap, and since they probably couldn't think up any more ideas for using the Ancients themselves, then someone posing as Ancients probably seemed like a logical excuse.

I liked them initially on SG-1, but eventually I think they did get boring. Attempts to take them in new directions never seemed to work out and they were a villain that outlasted their usefulness. Eventually I got pretty tired of watching the cast stand there firing their guns indiscriminately at metal bugs.

I did find it odd that whenever the Replicators showed up on SG-1 they always pulled out shotguns to deal with them. What, the P-90 isn't good enough in this situation?

A shotgun gives you a broader dispersal of ammo, which is what you need when battling a load of replicators that carpet the floor.

The reps were better--and far more creepy--as twitchy little bugs on SG-1. The human versions were just silly, especially on Atlantis. They seemed to be very whiny to me.

The major weakness of Stargate to me is that they have rarely been able to create and never to maintain an interesting enemy or villain. The Replicators are just the worst(or is it best?) example of this.

Then again creating interesting bad guys is something that most modern scifi fails at. BSG? The Cylons became laughably convoluted and silly. Doctor Who? The Daleks are ridiculously over-used and not scary at all. Star Trek? Nero is just a weak Khan rip-off.

^ His point about being horribly overused still stands. I'd like a few seasons without them and the Cybermen and that would build up their return. I have only seen the 4 new series and I'm long sick of The Master, The Cybermen and the Deleks.

They were cool as the spiders because they were single minded and creepy, but when they started taking human form I completely lost interest in them. Stargate sees nothing but human looking aliens on every planet, did they really need to make the replicators human looking too?

I swear if replicators show up in Universe, I'm done with that show, regardless of how good it is. Enough with the fucking replicators already.
