Replaying Old Games

Have you ever gone and dug out some of your old games and played them through to see how they match up to today's ones?

I did this recently... well, I played some old ROMs to see if they actually had any entertainment value left. Unsurprisingly, Super Mario World and the Sonic series still were quite playable, and Final Fantasy III/VI had to be put off before it sucked me in again (it's the best FF ever, IMHO).

I also discovered that some old games actually had new potential when enhanced with modern technology. For instance, take Michael Jackson's Moonwalker. Not the abysmal Mega Drive game, but rather the arcade game that was out around the same time. My local arcade down the local pier had this, and it was brilliant. I especially liked the smart bomb power, where Michael Jackson started dancing and all of the enemies joined in before exploding. This was especially hilarious when you were fighting non-human enemies such as dogs and spiders, who got up on their hind legs and started performing dance routines along with a load of riot police, robots and zombies. It was enhanced by netplay, and despite it being a Michael Jackson product (I'm not a Jackson fan per se) it proves to be a surprisingly solid multiplayer co-op shooter.

So, have you rediscovered any old classics (or had your childhood memories ruined)?

I replayed Might and Magic 6 couple of years ago and liked it as much as I liked it when this game was new.

I find a urge to go through old RPGs once in a while... probably the only good thing about playing these games now is that I can find a way to cheat through them fairly easily so I can avoid the grinding and all that.

That said, playing through the newer remakes of FF and Chrono Trigger isn't working out because I don't play my DS at home that often.

The FF4 remake is quite good, I've noticed. I wouldn't call the CT port a "remake." I wish! Or they could at least port Chrono Cross... but I doubt that will happen.

I like to pull out old games a lot. Ones I frequently dig up from the ashcan of gaming history:

* Civilization II
* Homeworld
* Master of Magic
* Master of Orion
* X-COM (and Terror from the Deep)
* Doom series (Doom, Doom II, Final Doom)
* Planescape: Torment
* Fallout 1 & 2
* Disciples II
* Stronghold (the old SSI D&D SimCity-type game)
* Deus Ex
* Command & Conquer (and Red Alert)
* Unreal (up through 2K4)
* F-19
* Quake
* SimCity 2000

Yep, I've got my list of perennial favorites.

I play old games them because I love to play them again - especially if they're good games that have stood the test of time.

Again, RPGs seem to be the most common ones I replay, mostly out of strength of storyline and degree of immersibility. I'm currently replaying Knights of the Old Republic to see how it stands up to my original assessment as a "remake of Planescape: Torment set in the Star Wars universe".

Well, at least they've acknowledged that the franchise exists... a PSP port might be inevitable...
