Repeats in the cinema?

Been looking at cinema listings for my local multiplex, and as well as 3 or 4 films being on in two screens (2D & 3D) im also starting to see lots of repeats, things like Jurassic Park, Ghost Busters, The Lion King, I also note that Titanic is coming out again.

Really what is the point? these maybe "classic" movies of "yesteryear", but shouldn't cinema have new movies?

With all due respect to Showcase, my local cinema is a dumb, nothing good about it what so ever.

How comes there are so many repeats in the cinema this year? is there a lack of new movies? Is it really profitable for studios to put a movie out again, given that people maybe already have it on DVD/BluRay, and whatever money a new batch of moveis gets from TV, is not going to be paid for a batch of repeats.

Im not sure ill see another movie in the cinema till Avengers (unless Joss has secretly filmed a Hawk Eye movie), however I am thinking of seeing Contagion.

I suppose I should count myself lucky that the AP: Reunion movie, is not just a repeat of the first one.

Nostalgia. It's not like they're releasing random movies. They're releasing blockbusters that might be fun to see in the theater again.

I love seeing older movies up on the big screen. There are theatres near me that are always showing something awesome like "Wrath of Khan" or "Raiders of the Lost Ark" or what have you, and it's friggin great. Watching something in a theatre with a crowd that's into it is a totally different experience from watching something at home, no matter how many times I've seen it.

Reissuing classic films in the cinema used to be quite common, particularly in the form of double bills, and it's a shame that doesn't happen very often these days. I'd rather see a new print of Citizen Kane than have to suffer through half the new releases that are in theatres now. Luckily, living in Los Angeles, there are plenty of repertory theatres that show old movies.

Never gone to see a re-released movie in theaters, and due to ticket price probably never will.

But I'm cheap.

The early to mid '70s in New York was a particularly good era for reissues. Within a few years I got to see The Wizard Of Oz, Gone With The Wind, The Ten Commandments, Fantasia (at Radio City Music Hall, no less!), and Song Of The South. I feel particularly lucky about seeing that last one, since, given the subject matter, I expect to be long in my grave before Song gets a home video release.

It also gives people a chance to see films on the big screen they'd never seen that way before. Couple of years ago I saw The Thing on the big screen for the first time ever, it was fantastic.

Better this than 8 screens showing Harry Fricken Potter!

Let me help you with this

In 2011, The Lion King was converted to 3D for a two-week limited theatrical re-issue and subsequent 3D Blu-Ray release. The film opened at the number one spot on Friday, September 16, 2011 with $8.9 million and finished the weekend with $30.2 million, ranking number one at the box office

The Lion King 3D was September's highest-grossing movie (with a $71.9 million gross by the end of the month). This was also the highest gross for a movie in September since The Sixth Sense earned $84.4 million in 1999. The successful 3D re-release of The Lion King made Disney and Pixar plan 3D theatrical re-releases of Beauty and the Beast, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc., and The Little Mermaid from 2012 - 2013.

Not exclusively, that would be truly awful. Love when my local cinema arranges "classic nights"

I'd love to see more re-releases of older films, I saw Star Trek TMP, The Thing, Back To The Future, Lion King, Jurassic Park at the cinema and I think it's great seeing films I missed or was to young to see first time round. Maybe 1 a month showing a few times would be great. Though I have the Cineworld Unlimited Card so it doesn't cost me any extra to see films again.

I certainly would have no interest in paying the full price, for a repeat, yet alone any kind of 3D premium.

Pretty sure The Lion King in 3D has exactly the same plot as the Lion King in 2D.

Well nobody's forcing you to go watch these films Wamdue! There are plenty of people who will pay to see them though. Somefilms are just better on the big screen, I'm really glad the special edition Star Wars films were given a cinema release a few years back (even with all the unneeded changes it was still great to see them on the big screen.)

But there's much more to a movie than just the plot. There's the visuals, the music, the atmosphere, the whole experience.

Watching Lawrence of Arabia or 2001 on a big screen in some great old movie palace, or watching The Creature from the Black Lagoon or House of Wax in the original 3D, is NOT the same experience as watching them on your TV or iPhone, even though, yeah, the same things happen to the same characters in the same order.

If the plot was all that mattered, then reading a synopsis would be the same as seeing the movie . . . .

Lion King 3D is just Lion King with a 3D effect added, there's very little reason to see it in 3D over 2D but seeing it on the big screen again makes it worth seeing.

They're not really repeats. I mean cinemas just show the same films over and over and over, which would mean every showing after the premiere would be a repeat.

As Starkers says it's well worth seeing some things on the big screen.

fair enough point, but I just dont see the point on spending the best part of £10 to see a movie, ive seen before. Also unless the film has been upgraded in some way, the visuals are going to look dated.

While we're on the subject... next Wednesday there will be a one-time anniversary showing of West Side Story in select theaters:

I'm tempted. I've had it listed as "Very long wait" in my Netflix queue for ages, I can't find a widescreen edition at the library, and every time it comes on Turner Classic Movies, something happens to interrupt me. I don't think I've ever been so repeatedly stymied in my attempts to see a movie. (I saw it now and then in my childhood, but not for a very long time.)

Tempting. I think the last time I saw West Side Story on the big screen was in college--and that was a loooong time ago.

Well, some people love movies more than you. I don't understand why people spend money on a lot of things, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to do it.
