Renting an apartment, do you read reviews?

Um...perhaps some kind of campsite? They often have bathrooms with showers.

Yes, this.

Also, if there is a county fairground or anything like that, they typically have facilities and will let you rent a spot there on a daily basis. Free electricity, too, in some places.

I'm looking to move in May as well... I live over a tanning salon that blares the same goddamn ten songs at ultra high volume from 7:45 am to 10:30 pm. I'm terrified of having to move though, because at least the location is good and the neighborhood is safe. That "Rentometer" is cool! It said currently "Your rent is reasonable for your area. About 59% listings are lower priced."

Yes, you should read the reviews. It's your best chance of avoiding a disaster (such as bed bugs).

Also, try to get an apartment on the top floor. It's a pain listening to people walking above you. You might also want to avoid the first floor as it's more likely to get robbed (even in a nice area).

I have a question; I could live in my car. Is there a place where I can live in my car and yet have facilities?

Honestly, WTF on this one? Why would you CHOOSE something that's really a "down on my luck, no other options" sort of choice? Unless your car happens to be an RV, why would you intentionally move out of a house in order to basically become homeless, even if there's a super-sweet free shower at the local YMCA? If you can afford even a shitty apartment, why entertain being a hobo?

'Living in a van down by the river' isn't supposed to be something you CHOOSE... :p

I wish it was a little more specific, though. I live downtown, which naturally brings higher rents with it, but the 10 mile radius compares my rent with that of the suburbs. So it's hard to get a real feel for how expensive my place is.

Unless you run the engine all night, the car is going to be cold, anyway. And living out of your car, you're going to quickly find yourself unemployable ("the parking lot over by the Arbys" doesn't make for a good address to put on a resume), so being cold and walking around are things you're going to have to learn to love, I guess.

Newspaper is supposed to make good insulation, if you stuff enough into your clothing, though.

Seriously, when you're looking at reasonable apartments, why would you CHOOSE to be homeless instead?

yep, I've read reviews to see if there're any roaches etc. or maybe certain specific incidences.

I made the mistake of renting an apartment for a three month term without reading the reviews. My first day involved a notice that they would be spraying for bed bugs! Gah. Luckily, we got out of there before any bed bugs got into our stuff (as the infestation was apparently on a lower floor). A quick look at the online reviews would have saved us a lot of trouble.

There's this site I came across and found it really useful when I was moving. It lets your compare your rent to that of the people in the area and it even lets you see what the hot spots are nearby. Here's the link if you want to check it out and good luck with your apartment hunting! :techman:
