Rename TNG

Rename it as "STAR TREK." Elegant. Classy.

TNG is fresh and deep as oceans new ... it should've had a clean slate, without TOS looking over its shoulder. In fact, TOS should've been the series with tag, something like STAR TREK: The Classic Series and let TNG just bear the name STAR TREK ... which it should've done.

These things annoy me as well, but really? So much as to name the show that? Like Nimoy's jewish salute wasn't a thing? Chekov having a non-Russian Russian accent? Sulu not being an Asian name? The whole TOS universe not being kinda weird with its flimsily-dressed alien babes daddy Kirk taught needed to teach how to love, and technicolor everything? Yeah, let's use your measuring stick and rename TOS, and the others too...Chakotay was part of which "Indian" tribe again?

"The Next Generation" isn't so bad a moniker for this series to be saddled with. But I do wish it had a tagline, in commercials and ads and such. For instance ...

"TNG & You: Perfect Together."

All jokes aside (and it's been fun reading through this thread), taking the question in the opening post seriously, I think it would be really hard to come up with a name for the series that would fit better than TNG.

Perhaps whatever the current Trek is should be called Star Trek, with each iteration getting a formal name upon ending? Like TOS and TAS did.

How would you have distinguished between TNG and DS9, when both were running simultaneously? Or later, between DS9 and VOY ?

Next Generation seemed appropriate since it's the generation after TOS that's watching it. They wanted to tell us it was going to be different and was. Gene really wanted to correct TOS's mistakes.
