Remember when ST couldn't pay enough to hire HOT actors?

I *thought* I'd remembered the Frewer part was originally intended for Robin Williams! (I wasn't sure, but I'm glad someone specified the episode to confirm my recollection!) :)

Not Eddie Murphy, Robin Williams, Sean Connery, or even the then current crop of hot young actors. Now ST has Urban, Pegg, Bana, Pine!! How times have changed. Now that the ST production team is more from Hollywood's elite instead of drawn inwardly, the hot actors just don't seem to mind working for them.

I admire the enthusiasm, but this acting corps is decidedly second-tier. Bana's time in the highlights was lost with the economic failure of The Hulk. He needs this to become the leading man he proved he could be in Troy. Urban's last headliner film, Pathfinder, was a total flop, and he's still best remembered as a supporter in LotR and Bourne II. Pegg is not a major movie star. He makes non-Hollywood Britfilms.

These aren't hot young stars that would otherwise not do STrek. Whatever the reputation amongst fandom, a new STrek franchise is a careermaker if successful. Almost all the sub-A-line stars in Hollywood would do it, and for cheap.

I don't even know who the FFFF Pine is. And that's not my failure or his, it's simply an indicator of his level in Hollywood: not much.

All that said, I'm there, opening day, to see this one.

So it proves the ST stigma really only goes as far as what's currently "in" and popular.

Just on a trekker note, imagine the first crew publicity shot. :)

I think it's a good thing, primarily because I assume that they went after acting ability and how well they read in auditions, and not based on how "hot" the actor is at this particular point in time.

Plus, as mentioned in a post in another thread, the egos and inevitable "Creative Contributions" of a successful, established star is completely taken out of the equation. Trek has needed a vacation from that particular factor for a very long time.
