Remastered TOS fx

"They will phase out the original versions, trust me, I know."

And 'part I' of this nefarious plan was to include both the original FX and mono soundtrack in their very next release of the series??

Which of course made all sane fans of the show happy.

Keep going, you have this lunitic fringe parody down to an art. I applaude your skills at mimicry.

I like TOS without the new special effects. I think the CGI just doesn't match the look of the old show. It makes the old show look cheap or the cgi look like a cartoon. When you watch an old film, you climb into that era. That's part of the the charm. I understand that the old fx are very old looking, but they went too far in upgrading with the new CGI.

I hope the people who make these things understand that people love old shows and movies for what they are.

While I love the new matte paintings pretty much without exception, and feel they tend to match the original footage quite well, the space shots aren't exactly up to par. I'd have preferred something like what it seemed Zoic was going to do based on their test shot for the project: a near-perfect recreation of the original effects shots, down to grain, contrast, and color saturation. Mix that in with some new stock footage in the same style, more detailed planets and some new ships to replace the old blobs-of-light, and I'd have been much happier.

Don't you folks get it?

John Titor is from the post-apocalyptic future.

In the dystopia, they don't have the blu-rays and the dvds WHICH HAVE THE ORIGINAL EFFECTS.

Im sure this is how Roddenberry would have wanted the show to look but just didnt have the technology back then. I like the new FX

Is there anyplace that has the Zoic test? I'd love to see it, I'm thinking it must be like the first (pre DOOMSDAY MACHINE) work of Scott Gammans, which just blew me away.

Likewise. I would love to see that.

There is a fan artit on the board doing his own version of the Doomsday Machine, and the pictures look wonderful.

I've been (slowly) going through the episodes on CBS, I mostly recorded them. I must say that so far it's basically been just the spaceship exteriors that got touched up, and I'd curently say that it's interesting enough for a single run-through but for rewatchability I'd probably want to go back to the old SFX. I don't find these a great improvement per se and I'm just more comfortable with the show's original look, the cranky dastard that I am.

One benefit of the new-effects versions -- learning of it finally motivated me to buy all three seasons on DVD, with the original effects. So far I've seen approximately 20 episodes of the new version, and I'm pleased with it overall. I'm glad it was done with a light touch. And the Doomsday Machine seems more ominous when we can't see stars shining through it.

I googled for it when I first made that post, but I was in a bit of a hurry. Looking now, I have the movie saved on my harddrive, and it came from TrekMovie, and it's dated August 31, 2006, so...

Oops. Looks like I misremembered. It was EdenFX, not Zoic, which explains why I wasn't able to find it before. Still, here's an entry with a link to the clip I was talking about.

Wow, I've never seen that before! That shot is stunningly beautiful. I wish they would have gone that road with the project.

That's pretty damn good, but the Gammans really captures the way most of the TOS shots were lit, so I'd still give him the nod.

I'm watching it on Cbs and while I love TOS whats up with the new effects? It kills the mood. One thing I greatly admire about TOS is the 60s aesthetic and then they go and ruin it with 00s cgi! I want bad fx, I like them, they have more character, instead I get prisitine 00s cg approximations to what the fx were like in the 60s. Bah.

They were made for people with HD TVs, who expect to see vision that looks like it was made for HD TV.

There are so many truncated and missing scenes in the US syndicated TV presentations of TOS, I'm surprised anybody bothers with them. Both versions are available, uncut, on Blu-Ray.

Also for ipod in itunes.

Guess what, I walk into the store to get star trek the original series, non remastered and what do they only have on sale? Star Trek the remastered series, this just proves my point that they're trying to force crappy 00s CG onto the market.
