Religulous out TODAY on DVD!!!

Flying Spaghetti Monster

Vice Admiral
Admiral
This is far and away the best and most important film of alst year, bar none, and it happens to be funny as hell!

The most common criticism of it is very undeserved... that he only interviews the idiots who beleive in religion and no experts. First, watch it, he interviews historians, a genome experts, and people that used to work at the Vatican. But I think it's more importna tto talk to the followers of religion than the leaders, as they are the ones whoa recertain of what they are being told, they try to tell everyone else, they perpertuate it, and, as in teh film, they can't defend any of it for one iota of a second when truly challenged. They are the ones that concern me. The religious leaders probably know its a sham! Anyway all the answers that either the leaders or the followers give are too well-rehearsed!

Get this movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why anyone would buy a movie with this guy in it is beyond me. He's hateful, hiis entire life revolves around drugs and hookers, and he's a kool-aid drinker.

I'll pass.

I have no issues with drugs, hookers, or kool-aid.

I do. Fucker keeps on breaking my wall.

Uh...maybe I'll start watching Maher's stuff again when he starts, you know, researching his subject matter.

I'm not a Christian, a Muslim or a Jew, but I was offended for all Christians, Muslims and Jews when I saw that petulant waste of celluloid.

As a filmmaker and storyteller, I also cried inside for days on end.

The film was a little enteratining, certainly not meant to be taken with any grain of salt. Full disclosure, I'm agnostic at best. He certainly made a few interesting points but of course, when most of the people you interview are on the far end of the spectrum, of course it's going to look insane. The end of the film Maher totally went off the deep end, though, and as such really ruined any point he tried to make for the previous hour and a half.

I'll pass.

I'd rather be drawn and quartered.

Alternatively, I recommend An American Carol or Ben Stein's Expelled.

Both are great. :techman:

My thoughts on this:

- This movie does not offend me. Bill Maher can make whatever film he likes. He may try to attack my faith, but he will fail. :)

- In general, Maher is one of the least funny people I have ever heard. His standup isn't funny, his TV show isn't either (Colin Quinn did it a lot better with Tough Crowd), and even if I agreed with his views, I doubt I'd like this film either.

- Even the title kind of sucks. "Religulous"...sounds like the noise you make when trying to hock a major loogie.

Why does Maher still deny that he's an atheist? You would think that it's time for him to own up to it.

Conservative author Dinesh D'Souza recently challenged Maher to a debate on religion. Bill hasn't accepted the challenge yet. I'm sure it's due to "scheduling conflicts" or something. ;) We wouldn't want the OP to think that his hero Maher is a coward or anything.

I agree wholeheartedly, Baba...

Maher's "humor" is like someone scraping fingernails on a chalkboard to me. :wtf:

Wow  I consider Colin Quinn to be about as entertaining as jock itch, and Maher is just a sniveling douche.

That's one of the more ridiculous things I've heard lately.

I really enjoyed this film and found it a brave and refreshing OP/Ed piece. In fact, I'm going to buy it and give it to my parents. I'm sure they'll love it, too.

So... that's all you have?

What I have?

If there's one thing you can't accuse Maher of is that he's afraid of speaking his mind, if you claim otherwise you obviously don't know who he is. And on the same note, I have never heard of the other person you mentioned there...

Are you familiar with any conservative writers? Just Google the name Dinesh D'Souza if you care to learn more.

And I'm not suggesting that Maher's afraid of speaking his mind. As a comedian, he's been doing that for years. But taking on D'Souza in a debate might be more than Bill is willing to do. We would quickly see who is smarter.

Debate what? The existence of God? Oh, good, I guess we'll get some definitive answers to that completely untestable concept, then.

How does the fact that someone could allegedly out-debate Maher on religion render the arguments made in the film moot? Someone could out-debate you, me, or anyone else on this board on any subject. Does that mean we should all throw in the towel on discussion here? If D'Souza has a problem with the film, why doesn't he just deal with the contentions made within it on a point-by-point basis instead of making silly religious debate call-outs that prove nothing beyond one guy being a better debater (possibly) than the other on his chosen subject?

Why does Maher still deny that he's an atheist? You would think that it's time for him to own up to it.

Why should he have to "own up" to something he says he's not? You don't have to be an atheist to oppose religion.

From a June 07, 2006 article titled 'Bill Maher Takes on Religion' in New Documentary in SlashFilm:

"I'm not an atheist. There's a really big difference between an atheist and someone who just doesn't believe in religion. Religion to me is a bureaucracy between man and God that I don't need. But I'm not an atheist, no." I believe there's some force. If you want to call it God... I don't believe God is a single parent who writes books. I think that the people who think God wrote a book called The Bible are just childish. Religion is so childish. What they're fighting about in the Middle East, it's so childish. These myths, these silly little stories that they believe in fundamentally, that they take over this little space in Jerusalem where one guy flew up to heaven no, no, this guy performed a sacrifice here a thousand million years ago. It's like, "Who cares? What does that have to do with spirituality, where you're really trying to get, as a human being and as a soul moving in the universe?" But I do believe in a God, yes."

Perhaps it's because we are secure in our beliefs and used to having to defend those beliefs that we seem 'well rehearsed'.
