Release delayed till 2009 to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of TMP

Ive just noticed 2009 will be the 30th Anniversary of The Motion Picture, could this be a possible reason for the delay?

Nope, or it probably would have been released in December.

It's more likely they delayed it to '09 just for the irony of Star Trek getting a prequel 10 years after Star Wars got a prequel.

hmm, I don't think they thought that out. Plus, at least with my way of thinking, that would make this movie a bookend to all the movies. Star Trek movies started in 1979 and ENDED in 2009...
