I did some digging, and found an old exposé on the FCC-censored designs in Starlog's Magazine:

So, did censors blur out the spit? They blur cleavage and ass cracks, so I guess it's possible. Or do I just have a crap TV?
Given how people on this forum react to the notion, it's possible that it was there at the time, and the low-resolution screens didn't really show it at well. When they released high-resolution versions, they realized it would be more apparent and edited it out.

I think Reremastering should put spittle over absolutely everything.
Species 8472's fluid universe should be all saliva. Every character must drool uncontrollably... otherwise it will be a civil rights issue.

The OP said it was there in the Netflix version.

Thanks to all for your juicy posts, helping to keep the thread afloat. But it may be that the only way I can find the answer to my question is to rewatch it on a decent TV when it comes around again on H&I. It'll be a few months. Hopefully they'll still be playing it then.
My mouth waters in anticipation...
