Reginald Barclay

Willieck

Commander
Red Shirt
I have just re-watched the first episode in which Reg Appears; Hollow Pursuits. I find the Barclay episodes very entertaining but I imagine some people might not. What do you think?

(I feel sure that Reg has probably been discussed before)

I liked Barclay, especially in one of TNG's most underrated episodes, The Nth Degree. I do think of him kind of like Troi though. Why was he better on Voyager than he was on TNG, just like Troi. I wouldn't have minded seeing more of him.

I got no problems with Barclay. He was written to serve a purpose in that first eps, "Hollow Pursuits". And it was fine. Showed another kind of character amongst the very ideal TNG crew.

That being said, I didn't much care to see him again and again... and then even more in VOY. Valid well-written character, I suppose. Just not appealing that I'd want to see more of him.

Kinda like Geordi in that first eps... just didn't wanna be around Barclay ;)

He bothered me a lot in the beginning. I just found him annoying, but for whatever reason, I didn't find much empathy for him. However, the character did have a chance to grow and develop, and I liked him later on.

To be honest, he annoyed the hell out of me.

I mean how did someone with that many social issues and hangups get through the academy and to the rank of Lieutenant?

I'm surprised his head didn't explode all over the classroom during his final exam like buddy in Conspiracy.

I like him. He showed the crew up to be arrogant twerps. They were prejudiced towards him when they should have encouraged him. He actually showed the audience that our heroes weren't as perfect as we'd been lead to believe, which leads to further development of their characters.

Hated him
I wish he and Dr. Pulaski died in a warp core accident and were vaporized never to be spoken of again. However, Dwight Shultz & Diana Muldure are awesome, I just hate those particular characters with a passion.

Apart from the fact that Dwight Shultz is a conservative nutjob, I loved the Barclay character! His are some of my favorite episodes.

Agreed he was better on VOY, though.

Barclay was good in TNG and VOY, but he was too jittery. The story, character were fine and fresh addition, but he was played too low of confidence, too nervous, etc - how would you ever get into starfleet with absolutely zero backbone and no assertion. I do happen to like Dwight Shultz, but Barclay bothered me sometimes.

The question was not answered directly to my knowledge but I presume he got in because despite his personality problems he had an exceptionally high IQ

TNG needed Barcaly. All the crew were pretty much perfect. Barclay added a level of realism to the show. I think it would worked with him as a main character. Look at Gaius Baltar in Nu BSG. He was a flawed and socially uncomfortable person at the beginning and also a genius albiet a bad guy.

Barclay worked as equally good in Voy as in TNG IMO

awww he was cute!! (not like that lol). And yes I think he did serve a purpose to make Star Trek more realistic as people have said. I felt very sorry for him as he seemed to have even more trouble socialsing that Data did and he didn't have an excuse as he was 100% human! Still, there are many self conscious people around who panic in social situations.

Gotta love the bit in Hollow Pursuits though when Picard accidentely calls him "Mr Brocoli"!!

I found Reg a lovable character in the TNG series but thought that the makers over did his role when they bought him into the Voyager series.

At least it highlighted that people can suffer from disabilities in the future, and frankly refutes the argument that TNG characters were perfect lol.

Well, none of the "normal" and socially adjusted characters were either. Picard was wise and cerebral, but couldn't handle himself around children. Riker was confident and brash, but lacked the confidence to take his own command. Worf was a proud Klingon warrior, but felt split loyalties between the Klingon Empire and the Federation and couldn't choose one or the other. Data had super-human reasoning abilities, but couldn't understand human emotions and behaviour. Geordi was a technical genius, and by his own reckoning could do complex engineering tasks and couldn't hit on a woman. In that sense, TNG characters were not at all perfect.

There is a little bit of Reg in many of us and being shy or reserved is quite common; probably more common in the real world than being super confident. How many of us having had a brush in with someone do not afterwards fantasise about what they would like to have said. Good old Reg; I really like him.

I didn't really like Barclay mainly because he just seems to behave so unrealistically. I mean if I was that shy and paranoid I would be more afraid of getting in trouble for skipping work than of actually going to work.

Individuals with anxiety and panic disorders are often prone to missing (or being late) for work.
