Yea, definitely seems to me, like it's a reaction to the escaping/expulsion of the energy, forces the body into that position. For example, you ever tried holding your eyes open while sneezing, it's impossible, the eyes automatically close when sneezing (probably not a good idea to have your eyes open while sneezing anyways, might pop your eyes out)

If The Doctor is literally Jesus then that might explain Ten's oft-quoted phrase of "I AM the highest authority." Because of the Father/son connection, you see. (The Watcher is the Holy Ghost.)

Its got more to do with the special effects requirements than anything else. In order for the regeneration effects to be properly overlaid on top of the filmed footage, the actor needs to be standing still with his limbs in clearly visible, body parts aligned on a two-dimensional plane (so that the regeneration effects don't have to be done in 3d) and yet have no part of his body obscuring his clothing.

Really, the only poses possible given the above technical requirements is the Vitruvian Man pose.

I think the regeneration effect is clearly inspired by the phoenix, and how the phoenix burns itself to ashes and is reborn. I always half-expect a big fire-bird to be born when a New-series regeneration takes effect and the Doctor/person stretches out their arms like a big wing-span.

I like that idea a lot.

True. Back when Dalek was first transmitted, a British Christian group complained to the BBC that the scene where the Doctor is bound, arms spread wide, to the scanning machine was 'obviously' a Christ parallel. Though given the Doctor being levitated by the Host in VOTD, and Tinkerbell Jeebus in LOTTL, they may have a point.

From personal experience i found the best way to regenerate was the old roll over from face down....a lot more comfortable than the whole fire shooting regeneration that the young ones do these says.

I think it's just coincidence, borne more out of the fact that glowy yellowy stuff is shooting out of his sleeves and he would look like a sodding rocket about to launch if he held his arms down...

If he put his arms downward he would shoot up and hit his head on the roof of the TARDIS, duh!

By having both arms oppose each other they cancel the force generated by the out-gushing of energy.....

It has a nice religious touch to it, It's not really a new idea anyway, since that Giant power bomb thing that Goku generates through the energy of every living person on the planet.

And why not use those ideas for Doctor Who? Chirstianity hasn't had any issues with taking over old Pagan celebrations and using them for their own ends.
