Regarding continuity: So... now what?

What should they do in regards to canon in the new universe?

So... now what?

We've got the movie. And things changed; for example: no more planet Vulcan.

What if... there's a sequel. And a followup to that one. And a series. What's your view on the loss of the reset button, and what should the new 'canon' be like?

Should they reset Vulcan when the next movie's out?

Should they keep these changes, and integrate as much as possible (for example: all Vulcan-centered episodes are now set on New Vulcan)?

Should they keep these changes and make some more changes as well, within limits (for example: there are Klingons & Romulans but they're more like their TOS counterparts instead of their TNG counterparts -- or the other way around)?

Or should they throw it all out of the window, pick what seems interesting and build a whole new, interesting universe?

Me, personally, I'm split between 3 and 4. I like change. :D

Vulcan being destroyed and Amanda killed REALLY annoyed me. You all have no idea. I've heard a rumor the cast has signed on to do 2 or 3 more, and Nimoy said he wouldn't be opposed to donning the ears again, so somewhere in the next few movies there MUST be a HUGE reset button...I'm thinking like, Back To The Future style. Otherwise, it was an EXCELLENT movie.

Four. Go ahead with the changes, they're good and nice and exciting. They don't erase old Trek, they just give us more to work with.

Change is the new black.

I want to see this universe develop. Keep the changes and go from there. I can get used to Vulcan being gone if done well. It's not about Canon. It's about the story, characters and "where do we go from here."

Indeed. Always with this fucking canon nonsense! Maybe the sensible people on this board should make a vow that when someone brings up that c-word, the response will only be the two words "Shut up!"

Vulcans being an endangered species is an interesting new twist in the trek universe. Run with it, and trample on some other stuff on the way.

^Agreed. The Vulcans will re-settle on another planet, and will recover and will thrive again in the new universe. If done well, this could be exciting. Plus I'm already envisioning a movie or TV episode plot where Kirk's dad from the original universe pays a visit to Kirk from the new universe....

Why? They could have made an awesome movie without completely disregarding established trek lore.

Now that they've gone forward and thrown the restrictive canon rulebook out of the window, I say they make this universe as different from the 'prime Trek universe' as possible. In essence, do everything that was not possible in the prime universe. Otherwise, why even bother?

What if they make Picard a hot blonde chick? :D

Or what if they keep to canon so strict that all future movies have a completely CGI cast? :D

That's true, it is a reboot movie after all. It will be interesting to see where they go from here.

Abrams and Co. have done for the ST franchise what the producers of James Bond did with 'Casino Royale' and 'Quantum of Solace', and I see no reason not to let them keep telling stories in this 'derivative reboot' universe they've created, especially when doing so will have absolutely no bearing on the continued existence of the 'prime' ST universe that began with Roddenberry's original Star Trek and is still being continued in the form of comics, novels, etc.

Aborting and "un-doing" 40 years of Trek History (spaning centuries of "history") didn't sit well with me. Not to mention the Starship Troopers means of getting green cadets into adult positions of power. I don't see why it needed to be set off like this.

Even IF you "un do" Vulcan being destroyed, you still have a CADET running a starship! Spock's mom dead, etc. It's just a mess and it doesn't sit right with me.

I enjoyed this movie and I can enjoy the future ones but the Trek I know and love is dead and finished and we're starting over. Simple as that. And this "new" Trek universe doesn't make much sense so far.

It will take a little time to get used to some of the changes they made, but they should keep them and integrate some of the canon that will drive a good story.

They can keep telling stories in this universe, but technically this wasn't a reboot. We should still see certain things happen, like say V'Ger. While some other things should not happen, like any of the Next Generation crew being born.

I think the writers thought they were freeing themselves from the burden of continuity, but now they've made themselves an even worse kind of slave to it. They have to figure out how every character would be.

Even when Trek deviates from the "original time line," not a lot changes. For example, in the mirror universe everyone who was onboard the Enterprise seems to end up onboard anyway, that somehow in this different timeline the same people meet and have kids and name them the exact same thing and they go off to do the exact same thing. :)
