Red Shirts

Brie

Commander
Red Shirt
One of my favorite parts of the original series was the good old red shirts. When ever they appeared you knew you were in for a treat. There were many ways in which they met their end, phaser blasts, transporter mishaps, falling down a hole. It was always something with those pesky red shirts. Here is what I would like to know...Of all the red shirt deaths, which was your favorite/most entertaining?

My favorite will always be when a team of red shirts was beamed out into space. classic Trek.

I guess "Obsession" would be my pick. The cloud creature is quite plausibly biased toward red victims.

A belated "welcome" to you, Brie! :)

You asked "...of all...", so if I can branch out into TNG, I would say Tasha, who would have been a Red Shirt in TOS. They changed the colors in TNG.

As an aside, my daughter bought me a bottle of "Star Trek Red Shirt Cologne" I had not been aware of its existence, but the best part is the box container labeling:

Star Trek Red Shirt Cologne

"Put yourself in the line of fire. RED SHIRT Cologne is made for the young, modern man of the galaxy who doesn’t hesitate; who revels in being alive today. RED SHIRT Cologne instills confidence, showing the universe your strength, your valor, your devotion to living each day as though it could be your last."

"It’s a daring men’s fragrance for those brave enough to place no trust in tomorrow."

"Red Shirt Cologne: Because Tomorrow May Never Come."

I still laugh!

Three (or four) memorable red shirt deaths:

The two red shirts getting beamed into space in "And the Children Shall Lead" are among the most frightening red shirt deaths in TOS.

The one in "The Ultimate Computer" of the ensign getting disintegrated by the M-5 as he's moving to disconnect the computer gets points for being really surprising.

My #1 most whatever red shirt death is actually a red skirt death: Yeoman Thompson getting crushed to death in cuboctahedron form, in "By Any Other Name."

You touched upon it, Brie, and it made me think: I went to see Star Trek '09 with my girlfriend in 2009, and when the first significant redshirt appeared (when Kirk and Sulu were about to go down to disable the drill), I started to chuckle. My GF was like "What's so funny?"

I was thinking at the time how, of all the things that they could do to get things right with that movie, killing a redshirt in an action sequence would be one of them.

Favorite red shirt death-

-"Friday's Child" opener, when the Red Shirt yells, "A Klingon!!" and the Capellan immediately whips his weapon at him & kills him.
Cool!

The most haunting , visually speaking, was by Rojan's crushing in "By Any Other Name"--" This person is dead."

Lieutenant Fred that was,Sybok! Even though Shatner calls him Grant, in the teaser it sounds like he calls him Fred!

That last one may just have to be my fave too. Or at least the most memorable. I just started rewatching TOS . I haven't seen an original episode since the 70s...and the Yeomans death is the one death from the original series that is burned in my brain. I must've been 9 or 10 at the time.

I just re-watched the first episode of TNG and I had forgotten that they had killed a red shirt within two minutes. And the guy is right there when the show starts; sitting adjacent to Data. When I noticed him, I thought to myself "Oh, that guys' a goner" And then Q iced him...

So, after being off of network TV for almost 20 years, the first thing they felt they needed to do is bury a red shirt to get things going again. I see no problem with that either. ;)

Except they said in dialog of the episode that Torres didn't die:

WORF: Sir, sickbay reports Lieutenant Torres's condition is better.

Ensign Mallory's death in "The Apple" almost really did kill actor Jay Jones when the explosion went off prematurely. Jones was hospitalized. That's not acting you see in that death scene!

Good catch. I didn't hear that while I was driving.

Well, that's just not Trek. Who do they think they are? Letting a red shirt live! :wtf:

Two. Two were beamed into space. Not a whole team.
Not all teams have to have a dozen or more people. Many sports have teams of only two people.

 That's cute!

I'm reminded of a joke I read in a print 'zine:

Two security guards are having a look at the next day's duty roster. The first guard reads his assignment and turns pale. "Oh, damn," he mutters.

"What's wrong?" his friend asks.

"I'm assigned to landing party duty with the Captain, Mr. Spock, and Doctor McCoy!"

"Oh," his friend says. "Can I have your chess set?"

apparently that's not the first time he almost dies while filming either lol. He has the luck of an ACTUAL red shirt.
