Red ringed!

This might be controversial, but some people have been buying new 360's and swapping the internal parts and returning the old one back to the store.

I've hunted down a pdf documenting how to fix the 360 yourself, but I'm not sure it's worth the trouble. The amount of time and parts don't seem really worth it when I still have a working ps3.

They emailed me this morning. They're going to send me a prepaid label and when they get the XBOX 360, they're going to refund my money.

Wow, I'm surprised by that. Maybe you already discussed this upthread and I missed it, but if I might ask, how long ago did you buy the 360?

I've had my 360 Elite for just over a year now, with no problems. It's a Falcon model. I've been very lucky so far, and I hope I won't have to deal with the crap a lot of you guys have had to go through. Sorry about all that.

Microsoft had better not rush their next Xbox the way they rushed the 360. They were so worried about beating Sony to the punch that they forgot to design a reliable console.

If things continue to go the way they are, beating Sony won't be a problem because Sony will be out of the games market.

I have horrible visions of the next Xbox being some sort of nerfed, underpowered casual games machine to compete with the Wii.

I hope not. If Sony does end up bowing out in the next generation, the next Xbox and whatever Nintendo calls their next console would probably be able to coexist pretty happily.

Another one of my co-workers wanted to pass along his thanks for this thread. Basically he was like me, he had a 360 since launch, went through all the problems and finally gave up and went to a PS3. But unlike me, he didn't go out and get another 360 when the Jaspers came out. So after this discussion, I think he's quite content to never own another 360 again.

Meanwhile I find myself wondering just how long my new Jasper unit is going to last.

I know how you feel m8, i don't think there is a 360 owner who has had the RROD that does not hold their breath every time they turn their 360 on.

Although the 360 has some great games i have to admit that 4 refurbished and another new 360 in 2 years are for me the limit, if this one goes down the tubes i will just be sticking with the PS3....whats annoying me more about my present 360 issues is that i have hardly played the bloody thing at all since i got it just over 6 months ago.

And it looks like the 1 RROD which is not covered by the 3 year warrenty is on the increase....

1 RROD

It's been 4 weeks. The console failed after 3 weeks.
They sent me a second one, and it failed after a couple of hours. Both of them E74 RROD (1 light).

I guess I was surprised they didn't make you take it back to the retailer. Any way, that's good news for you (that you're getting your money back that is).

Once again, I'm amazed they just can't get this thing right and I'm amazed that people (me included) continue to buy the thing. Of course we've been buying shoddy Windows products for how many years now? I'm con viced Gates has made a deal with Satan.

Yep. I think the spell broke on me when I bought a Mac. I thought, "I don't have to take this crap from Microsoft anymore. They don't own me! Grrr!"

What amazes me is as you've said, that people keep buying them. I guess people don't care anymore. Instead of getting their money back or getting it repaired, they just buy a new one. That blows my mind, honestly. To me, $300/$400 is way too much to spend on a machine that might work for more than 6 months before succumbing to the percentages. Anything can cause it, too. Watch a movie? You may have overheated it. I remember being told not to watch a long movie in the XBOX 360, or as Microsoft support told me, "Don't play it for more than a few hours. Turn it off and let it rest for an hour or so." Oh gee, I guess watching a long movie or playing a game with friends over is out of the question. I'm sorry for expecting entertainment and gaming out of my entertainment gaming system. I mean, PS Ones, PS2s could do it. PS3 can do it for a while. Gamecube and Wii can do it. Hell, my PSP can play a game for 6 hours straight. Warm? Sure, but still running and she'll turn on next time I start her up. Gameboy DS & Advance could do it. Yet somehow, amidst all of this, the XBOX 360 can't be on for more than a few hours at a time. What makes Microsoft so special that they can charge a large amount of money for a piece of hardware that only functions in a very limited way, and don't get me started on having to purchase a WiFi adapter when every other system, including the much, much cheaper PSP, has it built in!

Why are people still accepting this crap from Microsoft?

I can understand your anger, given your experiences. I've never been a 'bash Microsoft' person (and I'm not saying you are either, J. ;)) or a 'bash Mac' person, although I have always found PCs easier to deal with. I used Macs at work for years and had more problems with them than I ever have my personal PCs. So I guess my brand experience has been relatively even.

In my personal experience, I had an XBOX before I had a PS2 (I had a PS but didn't play it too much) and so I guess I bought into the loyalty there. My original XBOX, which was a pre-owned to start with, crapped out on me and I had a replacement plan so I lucked out and was able to get a replacement from GameStop that was actually a NiB that had been reserved and never been picked up, and it has (*knock on wood*) always worked since.

My 360 was given to me as a present and until mine Red-Ringed, I was perfectly happy with it. I haven't had to spend any cash repairing it yet, and as long as Microsoft keeps it that way, they won't lose me. I also have a PS3 now, but compared to the simplicity mixed with the performance of the 360, I just prefer the 360. It just sucks they cut corners to rush it out. Hopefully they won't on the next one.

But I completely don't blame J. or anyone else with an experience like that for ditching Microsoft. Frankly all it would take is one fiasco involving me having to spend money despite it being their fault and I'd be done too.

Oh, I still like Microsoft in some aspects. I love Windows XP. I used to hate it (when it first came out). I was even published several times for my stance against XP. At the time I was a PC business owner who was upset over the new authentication steps Microsoft was pressing.

Anyhoo, I still like aspects of Microsoft, but I think the XBOX 360 is a sign that Microsoft doesn't give a damn about customer service, they only care about the maximum profit margin. Do all businesses behave that way? Many do, but if this were the housing market and Microsoft were an agency like Fanny Mae, they'd be dead in the water. The turnover rate on 360's is ridiculous, and yet they get away with it. If any other company did this, they'd be bankrupt, but Microsoft gets away with it. That's annoying and very frustrating.

I'm sorry about your Mac experience. Mine has been splendid. This Mac has been downright dependable, fast and efficient, and it's a refurb iMac that's two years old (the 17" iMac Intel Core Duo 1.83Ghz). I love it, and while it took me a while to get used to it, I think my experience has been very positive. Believe it or not, though, I still like to use Windows XP on occasion, in my VirtualBox.

That aside, the reason I got away from Microsoft was that I was getting tired of having to open boxes. Computer repair burns you out a bit after a while, so I got a Mac. Now, I get this XBOX 360 and what happens? Hardware failure. Twice. I'm told "you can open the box and fix it!", but that's why I got AWAY from PC gaming. I didn't want to have to open a box and fix a hardware issue. I just wanted to turn the thing on and plug away at a game without worrying about resources or video cards or any number of things.

I think with this money, I'll just get me a PS2. DVD player, game system in one. Graphics for PS2 still look great. And I'd have enough money left over for a handful of used games.

J.

Yeah, I think it all boils down to different experiences. On average, I think Microsoft is probably a little more evil (read: less concerned with individual customer service and customer relations) than Mac as a corporation, I've just had worse experiences with Macs. Macs can be more expensive but you get what you pay for.

Just a word of warning: I'd be careful with that PS2 as a DVD player if you intend on using it frequently. I used mine for that for about a year and a half and it (the DVD reader) just stopped working. Now I can't play 'God of War' on it anymore. :(

I could pay and have it fixed, but, no. I just have a separate DVD player, a very good Sony.

Xbox 360's issues have cost Microsoft a lot of money at this point, I daresay it hasn't exactly maximised their profit margins.
