Red ringed!

Another co-worker and I were discussing the Xbox vs PS3 sales numbers and I guess Xbox has pretty much trounced PS3 all the way around. And we just don't get it. How can a unit that is notoriously unreliable be such a big seller compared to the PS3? Yes the Xbox, when it works, is an amazing machine, but as a person who owns both systems, I have to tell you, it's pretty much the same experience.

It's really puzzling how the Xbox continues to dominate when more and more people that I come into contact with that have a Xbox have had system failures. Granted I don't know as many people who own PS3s, but so far, of the ones I do, not one of us has had a failure. Of the 7 people that I personally know with Xboxes, 5 of us have had a least one failure, and a 6th person who hasn't had a failure yet, got rid of his Elite because it was making noises and he thought it was about to fail.

Yet Xbox rolls along trouncing PS3 sales numbers every step of the way.

I think like others have said, I think the Xbox dominance is a combination of the price and the game library. Given the recession, when a kid asks his parents for a PS3, they look at the price and say "No f*cking way, get the Wii instead." Then the kid complains that the Wii is for babies, so they compromise and get him the Xbox 360.

I also think that, while the RROD is notorious in gaming circles, the general public isn't really aware of how widespread the problem is. Plus the fact that Microsoft extended the warrantly out for so long, people think that if they get it, they'll just send it in for a replacement at no extra cost. Which, to be fair, is exactly what happens.

It's exactly what happens if you get the three light RROD, not the 1 light RROD. If you get the 1 light, they'll fix it for $100.

I bought an arcade version recently to replace my launch 360 that died for the second time. Since it was more than 3 years old no warranty applied. So rather than pay $94 to repair a unit thats just going to die again in little over a year, I bought the $199 unit with the Jasper chipset.

Oh, and the old power supplies will not fry a Jasper, but the new power supplies can't supply enough power for old units. The connectors are keyed differently so you can't use new power supplies on old 360s.

After talking to my co-worker some more, I found out it wasn't the RROD that he got, but the one red light, which apparently is an "E74" error which I've been hearing a lot more about lately. Apparently this has been an ongoing issue too, but it's just been overshadowed by the RROD error. Some reports say it has something to do with "loose scaling chip" (whatever that is).

It's even happening on the new Jasper systems.
Speaking of which, I just got my XBOX 360 back today.
I'm sure it's a totally different system, which makes me nervous. Will it plonk out in 3 weeks?

Oh joy! [/sarcasm]

Got my XBOX 360 this morning. It's a different box, of course. Hooked it up, re-entered all of my XBOX live information, watched a movie and shut it down after it was done. Total time: 2 1/2 hours followed by 6 hours of cool down.

I started it up 20 minutes ago and received the RROD E74 error.
I'm just going to get my money back. I'm not going to waste anymore time on Microsoft's half assed hardware.

Luckily mine still is working. I got a warranty on it, though, until Dec. Of course it will probably break on Jan 1, 2010 with my luck.

I checked and it is the 16.5A one so I'm sure I will get the red ring sometime soon. One day a few months ago one red bar did appear briefly, but when I turned it off and turned it back on it was fine.

wow that sucks dude.

Oh yeah, I'm very upset.
I guess I can go with my initial plan and just buy a blu-ray player with the refund. I'll even have money left over for a blu-ray DVD or two with where I shop.

J.

If you're serious about a blu-ray player you might want to take a look at a PS3. It's more money than a standalone, but it's still the best BR player out there as it is upgradable to different blu-ray profiles. And you get the side benefit of it being a gaming console too.

Just a thought to chew on.

Yeah, I considered it, but Sony has priced the PS3, even the refurb ones, way outside my reach.

J.

You might want to wait it out a bit, there are rumors of a PS3 price cut, BUT there are also denials by Sony. So unless you're in a hurry, you might be able to get a PS3 for the current price of a 360 Pro.

Its weird that there are so many people who are getting different Xbox's back. I got the same one back when i had to send mine back in
