RED Hydrogen One: Details and Specs Emerge Surrounding RED's Holographic Smartphone

From RED, the people behind the RED Camera, comes this new technological marvel:

From the head of the company himself, the specs.

Said preorders are here, but be warned, this smartphone's somewhat pricey.

Sounds a lot like marketing hype at the moment to get people excited. Why would I need such a device in ordinary life? Does it take pictures and videos itself in 3D? I assume this is actually just another form of stereoscopy with flat optics and perhaps eye tracking to render the 3D effect.

Knowing the RED Company, just like their cameras, it will blow your mind away, and them some with what it can film. This will be bought by filmmakers (amateur and professional) at first, and then (maybe) by the average person (this costs less than a car and the actual RED cameras, so this will be seized on by people that want to make amazing movies, home videos, short films and the like.) That guy who made a whole movie with smartphones (and others like him) will ditch their current smartphones for this one and use them to make something else just as amazing (for the public that was amazed that somebody could make a whole movie on a smartphone), I predict.

I assume this is actually just another form of stereoscopy with flat optics and perhaps eye tracking to render the 3D effect.

Read the specs again. ;)

The "specs" are unspecific as the underlying technology but I can only envisage it working on a 2D screen by arranging that each eye of the viewer sees a different image.
