I always wondered why they went with the different accents. Kyten has a tweaked out American accent and of course Cat is straight out of Motown. Kinda strange for an all-Brit cast.
Well, look at all the US shows with characters who use British or Australian accents, genuine or otherwise. An accent can mark a character as exotic or mark him/her as a particular character type. The Cat was modelled on James Brown so naturally he had a Motown-type accent. Not sure why Llewellyn's Kryten (as opposed to the original version) had a faux-American accent, though.
