Red Dwarf series 9 (or is it 10?) in 2012 confirmed by Craig Charles

Re: Red Dwarf series 9 (or is it 10?) in 2012 confirmed by Craig Charl

Um.

DVDs are on the cusp of being replaced, and anyone that thinks that a Bluray isn't a DVD is an idiot.

I have Red Dwarf X on Blu-ray!

If you can point me to links of the earlier series on Blu-ray, I'll validate what I think you're saying.

Anyway, to clarify, I'm upgrading from the eps I taped on VHS off TV back in the day.

I think what he's saying is discs as a format are going away and digital downloads and streaming are the way to go.

That's how I deciphered Guy's rambling as well.

I hope it'll be quite a while. I'm stubborn and will cling to the physical media as long as possible.

I'm slowly easing off the physical media. I'm only buying the disks of the movies I absolutely can't live without and streaming everything else.

There's no "my precious" factor with digital downloads.

Have you seen the smallest thumb drives they have these days?

32 gig and the size of a paperclip.

They have the technology.

There's a new non disk shaped medium preparing to strike.

It's just a question of what shape it's going to be and how it's going to interface with the player.

^Streaming and digital downlaods are only useful if you have a decent internet connection that is capable of supporting streaming and fast downloading.

And not everyone has this (at least not yet), for example in the UK you can talk about a digital divide.

Um. Try reading what I typed again, because I didn't advocate downloads.

Efficient yes, but no collectability value.

If our media can't be displayed on a bookshelf and our friends turn green from envy, what's the point?

Disks last ten years before they rot and they're doomed from a small smudge or a scratch.

Imagine an 80s game cartridge, or an 8 track, that has 7 seasons of tng hardwired into it. Each solid harddrive that connects with a player that plugs into your tv has an entire series on it of hundred of episodes and it's mostly indestructable comapared to a cd, dvd or bluray.

Shape and size questionable?

Wow.

It's going to be the revenge the Pogs strikes back.

You sill need a shiny disc copy of your downloads - unless you've got one of those magic HDDs that never crash (if so, point me at your supplier). At least having a disc in a nice box on a shelf is easier to find than a felt tip labelled one in a spool in a filing cabinet...

Right, that's fucking fascinating Guy. But since Red Dwarf X is not out on any of these amazing not yet existing formats, you might save the smug superiority complex over other people's consumer habits til then.

The documentary on the Blu Ray is very good anyway. It's a bit of an unfocused hodge podge, but loads of great material. For instance, when people hear the circumstances under which Dear Dave was created, and the reason it lacked a plot, they may find a new respect for it.

No it's "like".

I haven't had a serious drink in a couple years.

If I know where my pants are, then it's not a serious drink.

http://www.diskbank.com.au/articles/Sony-announce-format-to-replace-Blu-Ray/

still laser disk technology, but 25 times the storage capacity of a bluray (100 gigs per disk) and the stupid article isn't dated, so it could have been written three years ago.... July 2010 apparently from a second source.

Have you seen the british scifisitcom Hyperdrive?

(It's not as awful as a you remember, just like Red Dwarf isn't as awesome as you remember.)

But there's a point where the Captain is talking about how marvellous the new vid pyramids are compared to the stupid old vid cubes.

"Sigh"

That's odd. I clicked Red Dwarf X but I seem to have ended up in the Guy Gardner thread.

I still need to buy the Blu-ray but I'm hoping there'll be some news on XI, or X1 as Doug Naylor seems to be calling it, fairly soon.

Every thread should be a Guy Gardener thread for the comedy value alone.

Well the DVDs & Blu Rays seems to have gotten off to a good start, No.2 in the TV on DVD chart, no.12 in the Blu Ray chart.

Although the Blu Ray is the general chart, so it's up against all the movies as well there, the only things beating it are all massive blockbusters and the olympics Blu Ray.
