Red Dead Redemption

I guess there's no point in writing a full review so long after a game's been released, so here's a mini-review/discussion prompt.

The game's flat-out amazing. The storyline (so far - I haven't beat it yet), graphics, character detail, landscape are all superb. The game's a blast, there's so much to do, and the world really feels alive.

The ONLY negative thing I have to say is that Rockstar's control scheme feels a bit dated. It's near impossible to run and shoot, but fortunately, the missions are tailored to the usability of the controls, so it's not a big issue.

What a great game. Anyone else played it yet?

I got it on release and I love it to death. In my opinion it is the best game of this generation, so far.

I'll go ahead and agree with that statement. This game puts GTAIV (which I think was weaker than San Andreas) to shame.

For future discussion, to avoid spoilers, I'm at the part in Mexico where I just escorted a train... now I have to stop it. Also, I just switched from casual shooting to normal. I like the fact that it's easier to aim for things like TNT boxes. What's expert? No locking on?

No aim assist at all. I wouldn't recommend it for single-player. Just keep it at normal.

I really tried to get into this game, but I just couldn't. Maybe I didn't play it long enough to really get sucked into the story, but I just didn't find it as fun as other people. I plan to go back and play it some more just to see what happens, but I have no real motivation to do so.

I played through the game recently with auto-aim off and while it's great during the on-foot combat, on horseback it's really frustrating. The button lay-out makes it impossible to aim and ride at the same time, the only way I could manage it was to use dead-eye whenever I had to shoot someone on horseback.

It's a great game alright, one of my favourites from last year (only beaten by Mass Effect 2), very immersive with a brilliant atmosphere, and I'm somebody that normally loathes the western genre. I wasn't a big fan of the Mexico section, it seemed tacked-on, but the parts in New Austin and West Elizabeth were amazing, especially the ending

One piece of advice: don't miss the I Know You side-missions, they're a highlight of the game that I almost missed somehow. If you haven't already met him, look for the mysterious guy with the top-hat on the road between MacFarlane's Ranch and Armadillo.

I'm very tempted to get this game but I don't like the GTA games, particularly for their clunky control scheme and insane difficulty (GTA4 is the one I played the most), and I don't like Westerns, so I dunno if I could enjoy this.

So the difficulty setting, is that just for aiming or for the game in total?

^ I don't like difficult games either, so I usually do my first (and sometimes only) playthrough at the easiest possible level, and I can tell you that this game is doable, no sweat.

I loved RDR, by the way. :techman:

I got RDR before Christmas, but only got round to starting it yesterday. I've played it for about 10 hours now, and I'm loving every second of it. Utterly brilliant game.

Fucking bears. I finally made it to West Elizabeth, broke that elusive black horse I wanted, and it was killed by a bear while I was doing the last survivalist challenge. I whistled for my new horse, got onto him next to a river, and a bear knocked me off of it. Into the river.

God damn it, Marsten, learn to swim.

Couldn't really get into it myself. Tried, and wanted to love it, but I think all of the hype set my expectations way too high.

I'll go back to it at some point but it's not an immediate priority. For me, Mass Effect 2 was a better game last year.

This is one of the game i have reluctantly had to put onto the back burner at present seeing as i have so many games to get through, by the time i get round to buying it the sequel will now doubt be out.

 Yeah, bears in this game are like ninjas. You really have to be on alert when doing the various hunting/survivalist challenges in Tall Trees. By the end of that experience I had nightmares about bears. :scream:

Cougars are even worse, in my opinion.

I can recall getting off my horse to pick some flowers I needed for one of the challenges, then turning back just in time to see a cougar headed for my horse. I managed to kill the bastard, then saw the second cougar headed for me. I killed him as he was right in front of me, then moved on a little farther to get more flowers - and got killed by a different cougar.

Apparently there's been a cougar spotted in a nearby neighborhood. Gonna grab my knife and head out...

Oh man I hate the bears (and the cougars, wolves, and boars). While playing Undead Nightmare, I came across someone to save, debated on actually doing it, but then decided to shoot the zombies. Got pulled off my horse by one of the quick ones, but killed them all anyway. Then got killed by a cougar.
