"Red Cliff" available on demand before US theatrical release!

I was introduced to the story in "Red Cliff" through a video game series called dynasty warriors which was loosely based on Luo Guongzhong's 14th century novel "Romance Of The Three Kingdoms" which is available online to read (its legal) as a download,
I've read the book, and now that I have seen this film by John Woo, which by the way thankfully has little relation to the style of the book, I am not surprised that it has done so well internationally because it is a balanced well told story. I recommend that if you don't expect "Red Cliff" to come to any theater near you to order it on demand, and do it in HD because it well worth it to see in the best definition.

See this film!:techman:

Is the download the original cut? Or the butchered American cut to fit the "acceptable running time"?

I'm still interested in the US cut just to see how they managed to cobble together a coherent narrative by removing half the film. That said, if they trimmed that battles, it might be a stronger movie.

I'm not a fan of cutting a 4 hour+ movie down to two hours.
I'm curious how one makes a mere 4+ plus movie out of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which is so staggeringly enromous in its scope it makes Lord of the Rings feel like a schoolyard row.

I'm guessing from the title it's largely just about the Red Cliff encounter (plus preamble to, subsequent to), which in itself has enough material for such a lengthy film.

Saw the shorter version (143 minutes) at the cinema and enjoyed it. For the region 2 dvd, they released both this version and a special edition (two disks, both running at about 139 minutes each).

At the time, the shorter version felt like a full story. I've since seen the longer version and prefer it. :)
