QUOTE: I just wonder how much energy such a holo-emitter would require, compared to ordinary lighting.

Probably quite a bit. But if Voyager can effortlessly replicate the materials needed for a dozen shuttles, two Delta Flyers, 57 photon torpedoes (they had 38, they fired about 95), and 1.3 million cups of joe for Janeway... well, a holographic pussycat shouldn't be too difficult.

If energy conservation limits holodeck use, that would make stage plays or hallway LARPing believable alternative. I can imagine Seven of Nine being pressured to play Lady Macbeth, and killing it.
SEVEN: "Out, damned Spot? But Commander Data's cat is on the Enterprise... "

Actually, I started a fanfic in which some of the crew put on a couple of musicals. I used to work backstage in musical theatre, so of course I want to use some of them in a story. Imagine Chakotay and Seven as Sky Masterson and Sister Sarah, and Tom and B'Elanna as Nathan Detroit and Adelaide, in Guys and Dolls... the EMH would be great as Arvide Abernathy and we could genderbend the part of Big Jule to let Janeway have that part (the name is pronounced "Julie"). Harry could play Nicely-Nicely...

And of course Seven and the EMH in My Fair Lady as that's their basic relationship anyway...

Having done the show, I approve.

How about "The Music Man"?
Tom Paris as Harold Hill
Seven as Marian the Librarian
Janeway as Mrs. Paroo
Harry Kim as Winthrop
The EMH as Mayor Shinn
Chakotay and three redshirts as the Quartet.
Neelix as Marcellus
Icheb as Tommy "Wild kid" Chilis
Naomi as Amaryllith
Tuvok directs, and reminds everyone of the dictates of poetics

That's a possibility. I didn't have as much fun working on that show, though. I worked on two shows at the same time (the other one was A Dish of Cream) and I was doing props for both, plus gofering. It was hard being in two places at once, and some actors/singers were also in both shows (these were part of the 10-day gala to inaugurate the new Performing Arts Centre in my city). Rehearsals sometimes happened on the same nights in different studios and one of my jobs was to go over to the Music Man rehearsal to fetch people for scenes for the other show, and some people there got annoyed, taking it out on the messenger... Anyway, I ended up helping with the dressing as well, as one actor had a quick change but hadn't been assigned a dresser to help him. I had nothing else to do at that moment, so I just stepped in.

I wonder if Robert Duncan McNeil can sing?

Good question, though Harold Hill is more about fast well timed pattering (that'swhy Robert Preston got the part; he did that so well)... maybe swap the Doc and Chakotay, since we know Robert Picardo CAN sing, and he'd be wasted as the non singing Shinn. And he can just spawn three holographic recreations of himself (not actual copies) to play the full quartet himself.

I greatly enjoyed TMM, because I'm the guy who usually makes it into the show, but rarely gets past the ensemble. As the bass in the quartet, I actually got to be memorable.
