Neither. It's a number of interstitial elements, primarily in the form of a short story following each novel, an overall prologue and epilogue, plus a new author's preface.

I have no idea if there's even such a thing as a "casual writer" of Trek (I'm thinking like Greg Bear's brief dip into Trek with Corona), either.

Greg Bear was also a fan illustrator represented in Bjo Trimble's "ST Concordance", long before "Corona" and his SF novels.
