Personally I've never stopped hoping that the other series will start to fit better with TNG and DS9 over time as well. I mean Discovery's already retconned its Klingons a bit and softened its tone.

In season two their heads weren't as huge and they had hair.

They grew their hair back and their heads were not elongated.

I don't find it endearing or charming either. And painfully unfunny. I bailed after seven or eight episodes.

I generally dislike animated stuff, but Prodigy is much more appealing. It actually has some charm. I've seen two episodes and might watch more.

I'd avoid Lower Decks and watch Prodigy.

Still ugly (everything below the neck looks like massive burn scars), but I suppose better than where they started.

Still one of the better Klingon designs in my opinion.

Discovery's Klingons, both styles, are one of the best designs for that species.

I think the idea that ANY of the folks running Trek these days are not huge fans of Trek, don't "get" Trek, or don't care about Trek is absurd. They are all huge fans who care deeply as far as I can see.

Alex Kurtzman is a self-described nerd and calls himself a huge fan of Trek. He is the big kahuna executive producer for all 5 series. Not to mention co-writing the 2009 Star Trek movie. He did the Hecules: Legendary Journeys TV show with Orci. They rewrote The Island, co-write 2 Transformers mivies, and co-created Fringe, along with JJ Abrams. He has tons of Trek, sci-fi and nerd cred. And he is still the co-show runner for Disco with Michelle Paradise.

Discovery. Co-show runnners: Kurtman and Michelle Paradise. I don't know her Trekkiness.

Picard. Akiva Goldsman and Terry Matalas. Season 2. Michael Chabon S1. Goldsman is a lifelong Trekkie who attends conventions. He's also got screenwriting Oscar for A Beautiful Mind. And other credit 8nclude, The Da Vinci Code, I am Legend, I, Robot, and some Batman's.

Lower Decks. Mike McMahan. Huge Trekkie. Wrote a fan fic TNG season 8.

Prodigy. Ben Hibon. Rod Roddenberry also involved. IDK on Hibbin but a Roddenberry as an EP is a good sign.

    It's a new show. So it's "Nu-Trek".

Such statements strike me as an effort to ease the discomfort of newer Trek shows not appealing to all fans. If the production teams are not fans then it's easier.

Just shows how arbitrary and pointless the label is. Doesn't actually tell us anything.

I think you're right. It feels like a kind of gatekeeping to me. It's easier to justify one's dislike of a show (not to mention to feel smug about it) if the people running it don't really care about the material.

It tells us that it’s new. What else needs to be said?

Why does it need to be said, though?

Most people seem to use "Nu Trek" more as an epithet than a descriptor.

Yeah, but by embracing it we dilute it's effectiveness.

It never had any effectiveness to begin with.

One of those words that says more about the speaker than anything else.

Different eras get different distinctions. I've used it to describe Abrams Trek going forward and see no harm in it. A way of distinguishing from Berman era.
