Recommend Best Classic Adventures?

bionicbob

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Having now completed watching all DVD adventures of the current Doctor (series 1-4 & specials),
I want to go back and watch some classic Doctor Who.

I have just ordered from Amazon
THE THREE DOCTORS
THE FIVE DOCTORS
THE KEY TO TIME series

But as being somewhat new to the DW universe, I wondering if you all could recommend what I should buy next....

At this point, I only want what are universally considered by fans as the BEST OF THE BEST, the Doctor's greatest adventures, the essential episodes..... you get the picture.

In particular, any storylines that made significant additions to the DW mythology. Especially adventures about Gallifrey or the origins of the Time Lords.

Most are "essential" viewing. A few deal with Gallifrey and the Time Lords...

1st Doctor
Unearthly Child
Daleks
Inside the Spaceship
2nd Doctor
War Games

3rd Doctor
Spearhead from Space
Inferno
Planet of Spiders

4th Doctor
Robot
Genesis of the Daleks
The Deadly Assassin

Robots of Death
Talons of Weng-Chiang
City of Death
Logopolis
5th Doctor
Castrovalva
Earthshock
Arc of Infinity
Mawdryn Undead
Enlightenment
Caves of Androzani
6th Doctor
Twin Dilema
Vengeance on Varos
Mark of the Rani
The Two Doctors
Trial of the Time Lord
7th Doctor
Remembrance of the Daleks
Curse of Fenric

From a different perspective (meaning, not us) there's the list from DWM (the Doctor Who magazine). Last year, they did a poll of the fans, and used that to determine the rankings of every single story from beginning to what they claim was the 200th. (though, for some asinine reason, they seem to think Trial of a Time Lord is one story, not four, though Key to Time is six stories)

The top ten were:

  1. The Caves of Androzani (1984 - Peter Davison)
  2. Blink (2007 - David Tennant)
  3. Genesis of the Daleks (1975 - Tom Baker)
  4. The Talons of Weng-Chiang (1977 - Tom Baker)
  5. The Empty Child (2005 - Christopher Eccleston)
  6. Human Nature (2007 - David Tennant)
  7. Pyramids of Mars (1975 - Tom Baker)
  8. City of Death (1979 - Tom Baker)
  9. The Robots of Death (1977 - Tom Baker)
  10. Bad Wolf (2005 - Christopher Eccleston)
I can certainly understand why Caves of Androzani is rated so highly. It was the introduction of the very best Doctor ever. That's not opinion, that's fact.

Edit - http://wwhyte.livejournal.com/123285.html - I found this in a quick google search. It's the complete list as shown in DWM issue 413.

Fixed that for ya ;)
No you didn't, you forget to change "very best" to "most boring" while you were at it.

As you can see Bob, fans tend to disagree a lot about what is the best. I wouldn't rate any of the three you chose particularly highly, though I can see the rationale in getting the multi-Doctor stories. My three top stories that I usually recommend are Caves of Androzani, Doctor Who and the Silurians, and Revelation of the Daleks. The Tenth Planet, The War Games, City of Death, Curse of Fenric, and Doctor Who (1996 TV movie) are all great stories that would mean you've seen each Doctor.
