"Recapturing the 'Magic' of 'STAR WARS'"

The thing about these two films of the proposed trilogy, which this series will continue to generate after I die, is according to head honchette Kathleen Kennedy is these films are targeted for me. Judging from what I'd seen I found those films to be insulting to my gender. I don't think I'm entitled to everything just because I'm the opposite sex, I strongly feel everything I want to pursue I should earn it. None of those female characters, especially Rey, in Kennedy's Star Wars are very smart, and they seem to get things accomplished because the terrible writing made it so.

Another thing I find annoying is Hollywood's continued trend of shitting on great characters from the past just to make their new characters look better. Luke Skywalker was a great character, a symbol of hope and achievement; I followed his journey to becoming a strong man, and shared his shock, grief, and victories. It was a novel, a person every living being can look up to and imagine his future would be prosperous. Return of the Jedi did that for me. But to do like what was done to him in The Last Jedi was sad and pathetic, and mean spirited- - it's like taking a dump on the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial in Atlanta and then making a documentary of how much you've cherished the man.

Luke Skywalker in the Last Jedi didn't anger me, but it made me sad because this is not the character I grew up with. It's simply not the character, and I said to my man and my friends with tears running down my face that I will not see Solo or any other Star Wars movie in the theatres until Disney clean up this mess. You don't do this to characters like Luke Skywalker, it's unforgivable.
I didn't have tears running down my face, but I was certainly not happy because Luke was my favorite character as well. I wasn't as peeved at Solo dying in the previous one because the moment him and chewie popped on screen the magic was there. Both those characters acted the same way they did when I last saw them. Luke quitting made no sense whatsoever. As soon as he tossed the lightsaber like it didn't mean anything I knew that we were in for a bumpy ride. Definitely missed J.J Abrams while watching TLJ.

I loved TFA but couldn't stand TLJ. Haven't seen SOLO yet but everyone I know that has seen it seems to have enjoyed it.

It strikes me as kind of odd that there's this desire to 'recapture the magic of Star Wars' when that's exactly what JJ Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan were trying to do with The Force Awakens and is the source of the film's biggest faults.

He struggles with personal failure and letting everyone down? I struggle with this idea that characters cannot go through serious challenges and possibly fail. And this coming from someone who admired and wanted to be Luke growing up.

Luke Skywalker didn't need to be in these pictures, especially when TLJ altered the plot made in TFA. Rey and the bunch should've had a clean slate and leaving those great Lucas characters and have their happy ending in Return of the Jedi. I don't need to see these heroes fall off of a bridge ala Star Trek Generations just for the new characters to look better. I'm not the only one who shared this, I've found out even Mark Hamill himself disapproved, but, fireproof78, feel free to watch Episode 9 I doubt it'll lose any cash, there's several more of my Star Wars heroes Disney can dump on for sympathizers to enjoy.

TFA had indeed great moments but i think the problem was that it was too much a remake of ANH

That's what I said... and the reason for that is that Abrams and Kasdan were trying to 'recapture the magic of STAR WARS', specifically as they themselves experienced said 'magic' in 1977... and it didn't work narratively.

lmao what an overreaction.

I didn't understand why Rey had to defeat Ren in the first film in a lightsaber fight, it would've been nice she faced defeat in some fashion so she could be better in later films.

Luke in "TLJ" confused and irritated me, because he didn't seem like himself. I'm not one of those fans who believe that Luke is incapable of succumbing to the negative side of his nature. I've already seen this in the Original Trilogy - especially his penchant of giving in to rage when facing loss or the possibility of loss.

But his portrayal in "TLJ" - especially the flashback in which he considered killing Kylo Ren. That didn't seem like Luke. That seemed like something either Obi-Wan or Yoda would have done.

If they never grow or change, never face challenges in their beliefs, there's simply no sense in there ever being new stories.
I was fine with letting the old cast live happily ever after.

The Star Wars universe is very big and vast. Please don't try and tell me that stories can't be told without the old cast. Thats just lazy thinking.

I didn't understand why Rey had to defeat Ren in the first film in a lightsaber fight

1) Because Kylo had just been shot with a Bowcaster

2) Rey didn't actually defeat Kylo in that fight, since Starkiller Base fell apart before either she or he could gain a decisive victory, so stating that she "defeated" him is being disingenuous

3) Rey's proficiency in the Force is not even remotely close to being one of TFA's narrative problems

You're right. What I should've said is Rey kicked Ren's ass and gave him a scar to boot.

It was very lazy, and I agree the Star Wars Universe is vast but the small minds at Disney somehow thought it was vast enough they'll dress their heroine with an outfit which resembles Luke Skywalker and happen to live on a planet which looks a lot like Tatooine. So many ideas these hacks could've tackled but redressing A New Hope was all they had in their brain stems.

Rey is almost nothing like Luke save for being, in the parlance of Joseph Campbell, a "Hero".

And Jakku has nothing in common with Tattoine besides its desert climatology, and being critical of that aspect is like being critical of Kamino and Mon Calamari both being water planets.

That's not the point of this. The point is mutual sharing and understanding of another point of view. So, can we just exchange ideas rather than hostility? I am not trying to be hostile and will attempt to address your points. You are welcome to your point of view, and I'm not discounting your feelings. I don't care if you see Episode 9 or Solo at all. I think you're missing out on Solo but that's no skin off me so go for it

First of all, no, TFA did not alter the plot. Abrams himself stated he had reached a similar conclusion independent of Johnson.

Secondly, Hamill did disapprove, and then worked with Johnson for a more satisfying connection to the character. Hamill has since adjusted his opinion on the film and the presentation of Luke in TLJ. He has a much more positive interpretation now. But, interpretation will vary.

Thirdly, I don't really feel that the new characters are showing up the old. What we are seeing is the old challenging the new's preconceptions of them, and, by extension, the audience. Guess what? This is exactly what Yoda did, what Vader did and what Obi-Wan did in every single OT film, and Luke, Leia and Han all react differently.

finally, the characters never had their happily ever after. It's sad but true, and the EU treated them far worse.

It is far more interesting to consider Luke's brief reaction in light of those two Jedi training him. It fits very well with the Jedi teachings and Luke's own reactions in his history to the Dark Side itself. It's very consistent with Jedi reactions across the trilogy, including Luke's own, when facing the Dark Side:

Far from the deconstruction Johnson is accused from, he is very much consistent with the themes presented across the saga, specifically dealing with the Jedi and the nature of the Dark Side. That theme was established as part of the ST with Maz Kanata's comment in TFA, but this type of presentation is similar to what was done in ESB and ROTS, really the PT as a whole.

And, on a personal note, I found Obi-Wan's and the Jedi's deconstruction far more painful than the ST thus far. What does seem to be required is a personal effort to approach the films with a balance between the emotional attachments and "shoulds" of a film series and the realities as presented on screen.
