Rebuild Torchwood

The

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
It's the post-RTD era. You have been put in charge of the reviving the show Torchwood. The only two character you are required to use are:

CaptainJack.jpg

  • Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman)

    GwenCooper.jpg
  • Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles)

You have four remaining starring character slots to fill. It's up to you who is cast, and for what type of role. Your budget is unlimited enough to allow cinema-level effects and actors, even though this is for the small screen.

Cast the new Torchwood. What would you change about the concept and dynamic of the series? Where would you base them?

How would you improve Torchwood within the guidelines given? :)

Tim Brooke Taylor
Graeme Garden
Bill Oddie

and...

Kate Isitt.

I'd also cast the primeminister (paul Eddington), the queen (maggie Smith), a few other world leaders and just have some gray bastards hanging about how are not the big bads but more so just a little self interested... As well as the international ounterparts of Torchwood that every country in the world does want it's alien tech to get a leg up with.

My idea for Torchwood would retool the show towards a more thirty-something age range demographic. X-Files meets The Avengers, with stories of a more mature nature. And when I say "mature", I don't mean pointless sexual gratuity (although I wouldn't rule it out completely) and cursing. But, storylines that appeal to the crowd that's not going to accept Doctor Who's "family" rating. True horror, divorced from any glib tension-cutting toilet jokes. Characters driven by their personal eccentricities, versus being driven by their demons (i.e. adventure and responsible optimism, versus angst and tweeny melodrama).

Also, they should be based above-ground. Yes, the "super-secret-hideaway" Hub is neat in a high school fantasy kind-of-way. But, really, adults need to stop playing dress-up and take their job seriously.

Here's my picks for the new Torchwood team (I cheated and picked five new members):

CaptainJack.jpg

Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman)

GwenCooper.jpg

Agent Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles)

NoelClarke.jpg

Field Agent Mickey Smith (Noel Clarke)

  • Mickey Smith is the guy that comes from the alt-universe Torchwood. This is the guy that's liberated that Earth from the Cybermen. He's a fully-rounded and grounded character now. As far as physical fighter and all that...while Rhona Mitra's character would be the Lara Croft/Linda Hamilton-Sarah Connor of fighters in the team, Mickey Smith is more of the Indiana Jones. He gets through a lot of his situations by thinking on his toes, and usually a good deal of physical pain. But, he's not the kid from Rose or the fool from School Reunion. He's a man, now. He's seen war, death, and the end of the multiverse. He's not afraid, no matter what kind of crap he has to wade through. But....he still has a single, primal fear of shop window mannequins...

Rhona1.jpg

Tabitha Bonham, Field Agent (Rhona Mitra)

  • Tabitha Bonham is MI6's contribution to the Torchwood Directive. No nonsense agent, and the best chef Jack has ever met. Has a city girl vs country girl relationship with Gwen, but seems to revere Gretchen for her skills. Possibly bi-sexual. Definitely has the largest libido next to Jack...who is a frequent bed partner. Easily the best all-around fighter in the group, even managing to teach the two-hundred-year-old Captain Jack a few new moves. She keeps up an almost Bond/Moneypenny flirtation going with co-agent Mickey Smith, her dominant, complicated sensuality usually dramatically overpowering his suburban nine-to-five instincts. Thinks Manfree is smart, but boring, while she's not quite sure how to view Sally Sparrow (who she routinely confuses with other bird-related names on purpose). Equally fascinating to be around as she is sexually luring, everyone respects her skills on the field, even if they don't like her sometimes. But, she hates herself the most, for a few personal reasons.

Nesbitt.jpg

Dr. Bryan Manfree, PhD (James Nesbitt)

  • Bryan is a surgeon, previously with UNIT. During the beginning of his career, he was a Royal Marine until the field of medicine became his calling. Older than the rest of the team (except Jack, natch!), he's the most mature of the group in terms of emotional control. He's also the most professional which sometimes comes across as humorless or emotionless. However, his rapport with Jack indulges in plenty of witty barbs and dirty innuendo, acting as Jack's childlike straight-man. His closest kinship of spirit would be Gretchen, the strangely lucid teammate played by Tilda Swinton. They're both surgeons in their own way...her with computers and him with bodies. Even alien ones. He has no family, and no real friends save Jack Harkness (whom he first met during an undisclosed adventure in the 1970's). His only reason for being with Torchwood is a bit like Jack's....to be on the frontline of the next era in human defense and exploration.

Tilda.jpg

Gretchen Moore (Tilda Swinton...looking exactly like that!)

  • Former incarcerated hacker that now works for Jack, Gretchen is the flighty, pot-smoking, eccentric hacker that is deceptively deadly and seriously skilled on the battlefield of cyberspace and the mind. Think super-cyber-nerd mixed with Kate Hudson's Penny Lane from Almost Famous. Gretchen hacked the Ministry of Defense when she was sixteen, just for kicks. She spent three years in prison before being released to help with a planetary crisis, spending the next decade working for different UN agencies. She owes her life to Jack Harkness for some unspoken reason, thus her loyalty to him is almost palatable. That is when she's fully coherent.

Carey.jpg

Sally Sparrow (Carey Mulligan grown-up from Blink, complete with the dark-hair look)

  • Sally Sparrow would, like I said, have the dark hair pictured (maybe in a different style). Also, I would want it written for her character as if she grew up, probably living with the guy from Blink (who would be up there with Rhys as background supporting character), and has taken an adult interest in searching out the strange and weird of the universe.

I didn't much care for Rhona Mitra in Boston Legal but in those pics... Yeah, I could see her fitting into Torchwood quite nicely.

What are those pics from by the way?

Well not normally up for this but this one piqued my interest so...

First things first I'd make Jack second in command, not the leader. Barrowman's strength is as the charming rogue, not the passionate commander.

(One final note, I offer no apologies for letting my inner fanboy out with regards to some casting)

img_7.jpg

Thomas Clarke (Played by Colin Salmon) Leader of Torchwood and Jack’s immediate superior. Former SAS captain, turned by the book bureaucrat. He’s Blunt and rigid, but a decent and honest man who’s loyal to his team. He and Jack have a lot of respect for each other, but rarely agree and are constantly butting heads.

arts-graphics-2008_1132139a.gif

Vivienne Scott (played by Emilia Fox) Aristocratic woman who worked for the SOE in World War 2, parachuted into France to act as radio operator with the French resistance, it was here that she first encountered Jack Harkness and Torchwood on their way to retrieve the remains of a crashed UFO that the Nazis were reverse engineering- She quickly ingratiated herself with Torchwood, becoming a valued team member…this isn’t simply patriotism however, she sees Torchwood as a means to an end. Terrified of death, and of losing her looks, Vivienne uses every method at her disposal to extend her life, from misusing an ancient Greek longevity amulet to taking experimental drugs. She doesn’t sleep, instead spending a third of her life inside of one of torchwood’s cryogenic chambers. In the last sixty years she’s aged barely three years. Vain, arrogant, impatient, but a technical genius; able to comprehend the function of almost any technology within just a few minutes despite her archaic origins. She can be trusted, but only so long as Torchwood serves her purposes- though she barely ages, she isn’t immortal, and still hopes to find some other way of truly living forever.

davis.jpg

Sir Charles Cromwell (played by Peter Davison) Nefarious government minister responsible for overseeing Torchwood. Has his own agenda (basically he wants to be Prime Minister and create a new British Empire) and will often encourage the rules to be broken. Though Jack doesn’t trust him he often goes over Thomas‘ head to Cromwell to get the job done.

janchappell1.jpg

Linda Scott (Played by Jan Chappell.) Vivienne’s daughter, now a 60 year old woman. Antithesis of her mother, caring, generous, and without an egotistical bone in her body. She shares her mother’s photographic memory and understanding of complex systems, but her talents lie in biology rather than technology. A trained doctor and pathologist she despairs at her mother’s attitudes but loves her enough to do anything to help her in her quest. Will often find herself acting as an intermediary between Vivienne and Gwen who really don’t get on, and will act as a semi-mother figure for Gwen.

* * *

My version of Torchwood would again revolve around the character interactions rather than just be alien of the week, and betrayal and double crossing would be far too frequent- think Blakes 7 meets the X-Files!

I was kinda tempted to keep Ianto and Owen, but wasn't sure this was allowed!

Looks like Doomsday.

I hate Doomsday, which is a shame as I've loved Neill Marshall's other films, and Escape from New York is one of my favourite films, but this crossed the line between homage and rip off for me...Rhona Mitra looks nice enough, but sriously The couldn't you pick someone who could look good and act

Loving Tilda Swinton though...

Love the whole Colin Solomon idea of an immediate superior. That's smart, and something I didn't think about. I don't know the rest of the actors, save Cromwell. And while my immediate gut instinct is to reject the idea of Davison playing anyone besides The 5th Doctor, I also can't resist the idea of how he would just eat up scenes as the character you described. That's good. Damn you. ;)

Mitra was digestible for me on Boston Legal, and I think she carries action really well. Compared to the rest of my team, I would definitely say Mitra's character would end up being the toughest. Also, she would have the biggest libido next to Jack (a frequent sex partner).

And if she's tough as nails, then Swinton's character would be the flighty, possibly-stoned, eccentric hacker that is deceptively deadly and seriously skilled on the battlefield of the mind. Think X-Men's Emma Frost (sans superhuman abilities) mixed with Kate Hudson's Penny Lane from Almost Famous. She would totally wear some kind of silver contacts, as well, to give her an strange, rave-ish albino look. And her dress style would change with, literally, every episode.

Sally Sparrow would, like I said, have the dark hair pictured (maybe in a different style). Also, I would want it written for her character as if she grew up, probably living with the guy from Blink (who would be up there with Rhys as background supporting character), and has taken an adult interest in searching out the strange and weird of the universe. You of course realize this would have to bring an episode with the return of the Quantum Angels...

I thought it was ok till the end then it went from bing dumb but fun, to just being dumb.

I updated my selection post to include snap-bio's of the newly created characters for my actors... ;)

I don't know who I'll cast, but I'm tickled by the idea of Jack Harkness' son or daughter. Will he or she have inherited Jack's immortality? There's only one way to find out, but it may be a one way trip if you know what I mean.

Unlimited budget? I'd hire Stephen Fry, Bill Nighy, Emma Thompson and Robbie Coltrane and they would just ad lib.

Oh come on! The challenge is to be reasonable about it...
You're right of course.

Here's my - reasonable - selection.

Tracy-Ann Oberman as Yvonne Hartman, the head of Torchwood, mysteriously back from the dead to boss Captain Jack around. Jack knows why she's alive and he has his reason for acknowledging her authority but he's not telling.

Mark Strickson
as Vislor Turlough, the new field operative that everybody hates.

Natalie Press as the loveable but slightly psychotic computer geek / tech girl.

Struan Rodger as the Face of Boe, ante mortem. The team's resident cryptic advisor.

Nice! Yeah, you would think he would have a few offspring around the place... ;)

Excellent use of Mark Strickson! I assume there would be a storyline to reveal why he's back on Earth? ;)

Never heard of Natalie Press, but she looks sexy... :techman:

as long as Tracy-Ann Oberman dresses how she did in AOG/Doomsday I'd be perfecrly fine with this!!

Why thank you ;) Emilia Fox is something of an obsession of mine so I had to shoehorn her in there somewhere...actually quite impressed with the backstory I came up for her!
