rebirth of the DeLorean... stage two.

So, anyone remember when that DeLorean nut restarted the DeLorean Motor Company in Texas with the mission of providing a one stop shop for maintenance for the existing DeLorean DMC-12, who then went on to use his warehouse full of all the OEM DeLorean parts to start build "new build" DMC-12's.

Well, seems like he's looking to expand his business a little further out of the extreme niche it's been... with the new DMC Solstice...

It appears that the DeLorean Motor Company is looking to buy the solstice design and manufacturing plant from GM: http://www.houseofboyd.com/archives/227

They even have a very early concept pic up and are inquiring about potential dealers.

a quick look finds some Interesting comments made about this back in Nov on the DMC facebook page. A line about "DMC is a company without a car, Solstice is a car without a company" and a general feel that this car could be a springboard to a totally "ground up" design new DeLorean car based on some of the idea sketches from the old DMC idea meetings.

What are the chances...a friend of mine and I were talking yesterday about what a modern day Delorean would look like, and we were even doodling sketches to see what we could come up with...

About this design though...eh...I think an upgraded Delorean needs to keep the boxy look of the original. This looks too round to me...

If they're going to make a modern-day DeLorean it should look a bit more like the car it wants to emulate (much like the current generation Cameros and Mustangs look like their predecessors.)

This concept design looks nothing like a DeLorean, only slighty in areas like the vent over the rear window. The thing doesn't even have gull-wing doors!

If they'd kae ity slightly bigger making me fit in, I'd buy one. The Kappa platform was awesome.

Pointless.

The Delorean is beautiful piece of art because it was so revolutionary for its time. It was an amazing piece of art but its artist is dead now. If John Delorean was alive now, sure, it's possible that he could create something wonderful and new. But it would look nothing like his old car. To just 'update' it does nothing.

This is no different than writing songs that "sound like" the Beatles or making drawings "in the style of" Andy Warhol.

I mean, that's fun to do in concept. I certainly understand drawing these cars. But to actually build one? A waste of time and money.

EDIT:

I mean, look at the difference between John Delorean's earlier work and his later work. A 2010 Delorean would obviously be even MORE different that the changes between these 2 cars.

But we'll never know so there's no point trying. Making something that looks like an update of the 80's car is not much different than Harry Potter fan-fic. Ok, it's fun I guess, but who would spend money on it?

The guy who runs the new DMC has said in the past that he sees the companies future as not just "reproducing the original" but moving beyond and building "new cars which continue DeLorean's ideas for what cars should be." He was aparently inspired by the hundreds of design notes and drawings found in the boxes of DMC files they bought with the stores of parts, many of them hand written notes and sketches from DeLorean and his design/engineering/production team.
