Rebel Galaxy

It's one of this month's PS Plus games on PS4... and it's absolutely fantastic. I'm hooked.

It's basically Elite if Elite had a storyline, modern HD graphics and a country-rock soundtrack... well, it's (a rather large) part Elite, part Mass Effect and part Firefly.

I was looking forward to No Man's Sky until I realised how much crafting bollocks it had (not a fan of crafting/survival type games), this fills that sci fi/exploration/combat gap nicely. It's pretty huge too (not No Man's Sky big, but big enough) - I've put several hours into it and haven't made it out of the first solar system yet. I highly recommend checking it out.

Rebel Galaxy is pretty fun. I beat the campaign in no time, though. It's kinda short that way, unfortunately.

On the other hand, you can just keep flying around doing whatever you want after that. The downside is, by the time you finish the story you can do all the actual gameplay in your sleep. Battles become very samey and the only motivation left is to grind out more money to get bigger and better ships... which just wasn't enough for me. It's a game that suffers for lack of content. I don't need a longer story, necessarily, but things to do besides fight pirates and scavenge materials would be nice.

Think I spent about 14 hours overall in it, which is not bad for a game I paid $10 for.

Yeah, I've been taking my time getting through the story, been having too much fun just whizzing around trading commodities, collecting bounties, doing missions and being a pirate. I'll get round to doing the story... eventually.

The story is worth doing because it unlocks some unique abilities/upgrades for your ship. Beyond that, though, it's not that great. It's a serviceable story but nothing special.
