Reaper - (A Dominion War fic)

Dingo

Disclaimer: I don't own any of the Star Trek franchise but the original characters of Lieutenant j.g. Alan Temura and Lieutenant j.g. Ashley Cline are my creation.

The Ka Mate Haka featured here is the intellectual property of the Maori people of New Zealand.

The story takes place before and during the timeline of the John Vornhold novel Behind Enemy Lines.

AN: I'm gonna get back to my other stories but I've got a severe case of writer's block with both of them.

The blood red sun rose over the land bathing the Maori warrior wielding the heavy wooden quarterstaff called the taiaha. He bellowed his challenges at his enemy...

"Ka mate! Ka mate! Ka ora! Ka ora!" The warrior bellowed as he wielded the taiaha at the adversary.

Impassive and standing in the rising shadows stood the grim reaper wielding his scythe in skeletal hands. Face obscured by the black hood covering it. The shouted Maori war chant bothered Death not one bit.

"Ka mate! Ka mate! Ka ora! Ka ora!" The warrior bellowed.

Death was unmoved. Death was inevitable.

The Maori waved the Taiaha enraged. He would destroy his opponent no matter what or die on this dusty plain.

"Tēnei te tangata pūhuruhuru!" The Maori bellowed more of his challenge.

Death remained unmoved.

"Nāna nei i tiki mai whakawhiti te rā!" The Maori shouted.

Death did not blink.

"Ā, upane! ka upane!" The Maori called his rage at his foe.

Death will not be moved.

"Ā, upane, ka upane, whiti te ra!" The Maori challenged and charged.

Death moved it's reaper to intercept the arc of the Taiaha. Across the windswept plain no sound save the clash of the weapon of the Maori and the Reaper could be heard...

USS Lyric: Lieutenant j.g. Alan Temura sat up in bed and blinked. He glanced around the quarters he was sleeping in to get his bearings. They clearly weren't his.

"Alan?" a sleepy female voice said from beside him.

He glanced downward as the somewhat tousled haired brunette peered up at him with a blue eyed gaze. "Sorry to wake you love." Alan replied.

"Bad dreams?" Lieutenant j.g. Ashley Cline, Physician's Assistant to the USS Lyric's CMO Donald Fowler replied.

"In a sense." Alan replied.

Ashley looked up at him and said: "What's the matter? You've been having these dreams since the Cardassians aligned themselves with the Dominion."

"I just have the sense that something terrible is going to happen." Alan replied.

"I know its been pretty disturbing lately." Ashley said.

"We're going to war soon. I just know it." Alan replied.

"If you're worried about how you'll do in combat you did fight on Aijilon Prime." Ashley replied.

"I'm not worried about that." Alan replied as he lay back down in bed and turned to face her: "I did what I had to on Aijilon Prime it's just that I don't know what I'd do without you."

"What are you talking about?" Ashley said as she felt a sudden chill and drew the covers to her neck, "You're really starting to scare me."

"If the Dominion does declare war on the Federation, a big possibility given Captain Sisko's stance of late, then we're in for a big one." Alan replied: "And the possibility that one of us or even both of us might be killed."

"I'm afraid of that too, Alan, but we knew the risk of danger was present when we joined Starfleet." Ashley replied.

"I know. I just don't know how I'd go on if I knew you'd died out there." Alan replied.

"Don't talk like that. I'll be fine." Ashley said: "But we should be prepared to the possibility..."

"If I don't make it please don't mourn forever. I want you to go on with your life." Alan replied.

"I don't want you to mourn forever either." Ashley said solemnly, "Live your life if I'm gone."

"Now that that's off my chest let's try to enjoy what time we have together, love." Alan replied.

Ashley bit back an admonishment for Alan. He did have a point. In three more days Task Force 40 would arrive on the Cardassian/Federation border near the Badlands in response to the latest events around the Wormhole and Deep Space Nine.

She lay back down on the bed and felt Alan slide the blanket back up to her chin before he kissed her gently.

"I suppose we could sleep in?" Alan remarked.

"I go on duty in half an hour." Ashley quipped before she stepped out of bed to head for her shower: "Not all of us are landing force personnel who do nothing but eat, sleep, do a few drills on the holodeck, and workout and lounge around."

"Hey. Some of us are born lucky love." Alan said with a smile.

"You can sleep in if you want...but I think I need to get a shower in before I go on duty." Ashley said before adding, "Or you can always help me get ready..."

Alan stood up from the bed and headed for the shower...

USS Lyric Conference Room: Lieutenant Larry Johns, the commanding officer of the Y Company for the 3rd Battle Group of 1st Regimental Combat Team, 29th Infantry Division (known as 3rd Battle Group RCT 1-29 in grunt parlance), Task Force 40's landing force did a quick check to make sure that his element was all present.

The sniper platoon leader and leading chief petty officer were there. The indirect fire support platoon leader and LCPO were right beside them. The anti-armor platoon leader and LCPO were present as was the recon platoon leader and LCPO.

Commander Todd Wingo, the 3rd Battle Group's Commander walked into the room as Command Master Chief Stanley Dominguez bellowed: "Attention on Deck!"

The unit commanders of the four companies (A, B, C, and Y) all stood to before Wingo ordered: "At ease."

The men and women all took their seats as Wingo began: "I don't need to really elaborate but things look like they're escalating on the border. The Klingons have been getting into it on the border with the Jem'Hadar. Captain Sisko has been squaring off with Gul Dukat and Weyoun over the issue of Dominion forces constantly coming through the wormhole and the higher ups think war is inevitable."

"The plans shop has been drawing up our defensive posture along the border for a while and I'm not going to rehash what you're aware of. I've called this meeting to discuss contingency plans." Wingo replied: "As you're aware the Jem'Hadar forces are quite a formidable adversary. The USS Odyssey being destroyed two years ago and how handily they expelled Klingon and Maquis forces from Cardassian territory are just two examples of the sort of foe we face. Division J-3 has ordered us to draw up a contingency plan. If we're overrun and have the capability to fight we will follow the example of the Maquis and the Bajoran Resistance. We will fight as stay behind elements and be as big a pain in the ass to the Dominion as we can possibly be. Any inputs?"

"Sir that's a tall order in all honesty. We really don't have a lot of experience fighting that sort of war." Lieutenant John Sharpe A-Company's CO remarked.

"I disagree frankly. We have such assets in our element. For instance my recon and sniper platoons would be capable assets for such a fight." Johns replied: "I can have them give a crash course of instruction to the rest of the Battle Group."

"We have our share of Bajorans in the ranks. I personally know a few guys in my company were former Resistance fighters. For instance Chief Skirata in first platoon." Lieutenant Callie Morton replied.

"A few ex Resistance fighters and a couple dozen scruffy folks don't make a credible resistance force." Sharpe replied.

"Before this degenerates into an arguement ladies and gentlemen let's be clear on one thing. We have to be prepared for the worst case scenario rather than being surprised by this. I'll release you to take care of your planning. Make no mistake we're in for the fight of our lives." Wingo replied.

Wingo dismissed the unit commanders before heading out. Johns glanced over at Alan Temura, his sniper platoon leader. He appeared to be drawing something on his PADD.

The large framed New Englander glanced down at Temura's PADD before remarking: "Doing something productive?"

"Yes sir. If we are planning to have to fight behind the lines for protracted period the fighting could easily be hand to hand." Alan replied.

"What is that then?" Johns asked.

"That sir is a taiaha. It's a hardwood staff wielded by the Maori tribesmen of New Zealand." Alan replied.

"I thought you weren't quite in touch with your Maori heritage." Johns replied.

"Well sir that's a long story in and of itself." Alan replied.

"Never thought obsolete traditions would ever come in handy huh?" Johns said.

"War's full of ironies sir." Alan said before he headed off.

"Cline to Temura and Ferrante. Could you two come down to Sickbay?" Ashley's voice echoed over the comm badge.

"On my way." Temura said.
