Really odd Office '07 problem - windows automatically retiled on paste

One of my colleagues is trying to copy/paste some charts from Excel '07 to Office '07. He opens both, then right-clicks a graph in Excel, selects Copy, goes to Word and selects Paste.

It seems to paste OK, but the Excel and Word windows then appear side by side (whereas before they had both been maximised). Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening, and how to stop it?

Is he using paste or paste/link? If the latter, maybe office 07 is trying to anticipate that he may want to see both screens while working on the data in excel.
