"Real Steel" trailer out--Hugh Jackman in Twilight Zone movie remake

Re: "Real Steel" trailer out--Hugh Jackman in Twilight Zone movie rema

My initial reaction is, "Meh."

If it wasn't for the stars involved I think this thing would be DOA.

I can't even figure out anything about the plot from this preview. When Rock'em Sock'em Robots go bad?

Re: "Real Steel" trailer out--Hugh Jackman in Twilight Zone movie rema

Its simple. Ex boxer in the future needs to pay off debt by fixing up and training pugilist robot because that is what sports entertainment of tomorrow wil be like. Hilarity ensues.

I like my idea better.

Which is a shame..wish there was more room for mid-level SF projects out there. Then it wouldn't be all or nothing.

RAMA

There are mid-level projects out there: Moon, District 9, Sunshine, Skyline, The Road, etc. Even Book of Eli and Surrogates were budgeted in the range of Real Steel (around $80M) Probably more depending on how flexible you are about what is SF.

Re: "Real Steel" trailer out--Hugh Jackman in Twilight Zone movie rema

Technically it's not a remake of a Twilight Zone episode, it's a new adaptation of a Richard Matheson short story that was also adapted (by Matheson) for TZ. Lately there seem to be a lot of feature film adaptations of Matheson stories that have previously been adapted, including I Am Legend (previously adapted as The Last Man on Earth and The Omega Man) and The Box (based on Matheson's "Button, Button," which was adapted -- again by Matheson himself -- for the 1985 TZ revival).

Yeah a few here and there but not like in the 80s or 90s. The ones that are produced are often very good, as you point out. I was shocked to learn that District 9's budget was only $30 million today!! Effectively "low budget". Skyline also is in the low budget range, being made for STII, 1982 prices ($10 million). Considering its budget, I'd say Skyline is a huge success production-wise. I'd consider Real Steel and Surrogates in the big budget range.

This is NOT the Robot Jox remake I've been hoping for.

DAMMIT!!

He's also trying to turn Somewhere in Time into a Broadway musical, and has a new novel, Other Kingdoms, coming out in March.

Not bad for a guy whose first movie sale was The Incredible Shrinking Man over sixty years ago . . . .
